Big pointed bullets in the 500S&W?
« on: November 23, 2006, 04:39:32 AM »
Has anyone shot a bullet designed for the 50 BMG out their 500 S&W?  I have some 700 grain lead flat nose that I purchased from the fellow in Homer, AK and I assume they will shoot alright.  I know the 50 BMG bullets are high and very impractical, so i am not interested in logic just experience....thanks.

Sounds like fun!!! But the BMG uses .510" bullets, the .500S&W .500". They'd go thru the bore, but with quite an increase in pressure, I'd think.

i wonder if they would size down without to much trouble..... i have seen bullet sizing dies mentioned on big bore forums.  I need to look into this a little further.

Another issue is the slower 1:18¾" twist rate of the Handi, .50BMG twist is 1:15", the slower rate may not stabilize the long pointies at the velocity capable from the .500. The slower twist may have been H&R's attempt to reduce pressures some.

Also, how deep is the throat on the .500? The long pointy may intrude too much into the .500 case limiting powder capacity even more. :'(
