What to get?s
« on: November 23, 2006, 05:22:57 AM »
Havnt hunted ML in about 25 years I wimped and bought a NEF  sidekick about a week ago to hunt this season, Starts this Sat.
The last ML I owned was 25yrs ago and I think its was a CVA Hawken or such 50cal
I want to buy something more traditional along the lines of a Hawken
I want to use 777 as this is what I use in BP cartridge
This would be RB only for deer hunting 50cal or 54cal which would be better?
I am thinking about a Lymann GPR kit from Track Of The Wolf to have something to do over the winter not capable of finishing anything much more complicated then this.
Thoughts comments suggestions(Not to include my purchase of the NEF) ::)

Thanks

The Lyman Great Plains Rifle is a beautiful thing.
Do it!
Aim small don't miss.

Some may disagree, but I think 54 caliber is a better ball size then the 50's.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

  i would go with a 54 . while the 50 is good , the 54 IMO is better .
the lyman GPR is also a very good rifle  look around on the price . Wally world also sells the lyman  so go back to sporting goods and ask to see their special order catalogue.
My bet is you will save a 100 or so over ToW

The GPR in .54 would be hard to beat.  A little more lead and energy.

I'm just going to have to agree with everyone else.  A Lyman GPR in 54 cal.  I had one and took several deer along with winning a few matches.  Only reason I parted with it was to upgrade to a custom Hawken.  The new rifle doesn't shoot any better but I sure look good doing it!

530 ball weight is around 230 grs., ain't no need for anything more, and a good hunting load for me has been 100 grs. of Ffg.  You mentioned T-7 and I understand it should be reduced by a percentage.....which I don't remember!

A 50 cal. ball is usually .490 weighs around 175 grs..  Back when I used 50's my hunting load was 90 grs. of Ffg.

Thanks looks like I need to find a GPR in 54 cal.  Yes the 777 is rated at about 10-15% hotter.
