New stock for the Encore

Been doing some reading and it looks like gunstocksinc.com has what I want in wood for my encore. Heres my question...this will be the first stock Iv ever finished my self and am looking for some instruction. Im good with the sanding and fiting of the stock and fore end but am a little clueless on the finish. Id like to do somthing that will last and isnt going to scratch by just looking at it cross eyed. Do you guys typically use a stain followed by several layers fo laquer with light sanding between or is there some other method that is better for the conditions of the out doors. Any help would be appreciated.

Laquer and varnish is for kitchen cabinets and furniture not gunstocks. Use an oil finish on a gunstock.
If you ask the folks at gunstocks Inc. they will e-mail you finishing instructions.

This site provides a lot of information about finishing/refinishing gun stocks.  I use Tru-Oil.  It goes on easily and gives a great finish.  You should have a good durable coat in about 3 applications.  If you like a lot of gloss, just add more coats.  If you do scratch the stock, add a little Tru-oil to the area and it blends it in nicely.

I have purchased a couple of stocks from gunstocksinc.  The inletting was perfect on both with no fitting needed.

I put two coats of stain with 3-5 coats of polyurethane on mine.

I have two of the stocks from Gunstocks Inc.  I only applied stain to one made out of cherry.  The other is a laminate and didn't require stain.  I used the materials recommended by them and followed their instructions to the letter.  They turned out great and they have a tough finish to boot.

on walnut tru oil then burlap polish the more the times the better. i have a old 30-30 i put this combo on  9 times the finish looks to be 1/8 inch thick.do it over a 6 month time frame with alot of burlap polish it is as hard as glass

I like several coats of Tung Oil.
