256 Maximum
« on: November 24, 2006, 11:01:07 PM »
Are any of you guys shooting a 256 Maximum? If so, can you share some load info. Particulary interested in velocity with 87-100 grain bullets. What is its case capacity? Thinking of one on a Contender to compliment my Brown 97D in 256 Mag. Thanks guys.

Check out data for the 25-222 Copperhead. You should be mighty close to that one, and just a little short of a 257 TCU. It ought to make a pretty effective cartridge, and work great in the Contender.

Actually the .256 Win. mag. is closer to the .221 Fire Ball case necked to .25 cal. than the .222 case necked up so the Copper Head data would be way to hot. I do shoot a .25-221 and the case is a hair larger than the .256 case. I got my data from an old Layman manual. It does not have data for anything heaver than an 86 gn. jacketed bullet or a 90 gn. cast. The max. velocity they give for the 86 gn. bullet through a 24 in. barrel is 2212 fps. It is a fun little round and not real loud.

It should be a pretty easy project to do, keep us posted on it, or at least keep me posted on it I've thought about it a few times over the years even got some cases made up for it. Annealed some 357MX cases and some 360DW cases and ran them into the 256WM dies when making 256WM cases just for Ideas.
