platinum powerbelts
« on: November 25, 2006, 04:15:30 AM »
Wondering if anyone has any experience with the new platinum PB's versus the old?  I shoot the old 295 aero tips over two 50 gr Triple Seven pellets in a 50 cal CVA Kodiak Pro, fittted with a 2x7x36 Bushnell scope, with more than tolerable results for Michigan whitetails; average shot is 80 yards or less  Anything to gain from the new platinums, other than adding to the PB profit margin, as I see they only come in 270 and 338 gr at a higher price than the old?

Just from posts I've read, don't expect much expansion on deer soft tissue at any bullet speeds. That bullet performs better on deer when it contacts bone. Both pass-thrus I read about had the same-size exit hole as entry hole.

In that price range, I would suggest a copper 300 gr. XTP or 250-300 grain Barnes Expander.  In lead, 300 grain Cabelas Dead Centers & Extended Rangers, 375 grain Buffalo Special Sabot Bullets or the el-cheapo 240 grain T/C Cheapshots all work well.

I was going to try them in my Encore but decided to go with the T/C Bonded shockwave. My buddy bought 5 packs from me of the 270 gr. He went to shoot them and they hit the same point of aim as he 295 gr. powerbelts. His wife shot a small buck with one, and it worked great. The exit hole was about the size of a silver dollar. The bullet passed through the deer broad side hitting the ribs in and out.
If  you're going to make a hole, make it a big one.

I took 2 deer with the 270gr Platinum powerbelts this year.  First was about 170lb 8 pointer.  The shot was about 60 yards and he was facing me and looking at me.   Shot between the 2 shoulders and recovered the bullet against one of the ribs.  It was flat as a pancake and about 1.5" in diameter.

2nd deer was a mature doe at about 80 yards.  She was quartering towards me.  Unfortunately, I think I knocked my scope off after the buck and hit her a little too far back...gut shot.  She only ran about 40 yards.  The liver was destroyed.  Bullet entered just behind the lungs and ended up against her milk sack.  It didn't hit a single bone, all soft tissue (but a lot of it).  Nice mushroom and measured it to be 70% weight retention.

150 grains (3 pellets) of 777 in a CVA Optima w/ 26" barrel.     I know that sounds excessive for reasonably short shots, but sometimes I can't predict if I will be in the woods or in a large field.  Got a small buck last year at 150 yards with the 295gr hollow points.  Talk about expansion.     The gun shoots that load very good at approx. 1.5" groups.

That's incredible shot groups there. Goes to show the new Powerbelt Platinum skirt can handle the charge. They should put that skirt on all Powerbelts.
