I busted a Buck
« on: November 25, 2006, 07:22:40 AM »
Got him this morning at 7:30. He was quartering towards me at 40 yards. I took the high shoulder shot. I am shooting the 250 SST at 2,300 fps from a Savage. The buck was knocked over, and lay still, dead.
The slug destroyed the top 1/3 of the shoulder, passed just beneath the spine, took out both lungs and one big artery coming from the heart, and came to rest just under the skin in the middle of the far lung. I recovered two jagged chunks of copper, and one of lead, weighing 156 gr. They were laying side by side, but no longer connected.
Love the Savage.
Aim small don't miss.

Congrats!

The SST did the job and dead is dead, but that was an ideal shot placement & bullet speed for a Bonded Shockwave. Surely, deeper penetration than the far lung would of occured.

Do I have you thinking about changing bullets?
Keep that ML smokin'

That was the first time I used the SST.
I am a bit dismayed at the utter disintegration of the bullet.
I am thinking of changing bullets. But, I want to take lung shots, so the SST should do fine with those.
And, if you have to take out a shoulder, the SST will do it.

Congrats,

first off we had terribel performance out of the bonded shockwave sst in africa this past year the year beofre we used the standard sst  300 grain at 2300fps in out ultimates and they killed great..... the performance of the bonded was aweful.

the sst has been doing well by me in my gun for a long time .. longest shot this year of 317 and it dropped  doa.

now i have een using the barnes tmz flatbase  and its been impressive 290 grain bullet

i think the big issue is bullet weight! simion have you tried th e300 grain

I have only killed this one deer with the SST. I am going to continue to use it, and go for the lung shot, my favorite.
Yes I am thinking about changing bullets. If I were going after heavier game than deer I would definitely change.
