That's a great story.

I've always been a fan of the .44.  I know there are bigger calibers available, but I always go back to the .44.  It is my favorite caliber.

I wonder what king of handgun and load it was?

Excellent story! Thanks for posting it. Love a happy ending. It would be interesting to know, what his load in the pistol, was? Hard cast lead, I suspect?

Yeah, a guy down here in Seward shot and killed a charging brownie here the summer before last.  .44mag is still the most carried revolver in Alaska, no matter how many more calibers there are out there.

Amazing. I don't know what to say. The bear looked as big as the moose. For a 44 mag to do that you got to admit that some Divine intervention helped these guys live. It is just amazing.  I also want to know the load.  Ron

 That was a very interesting story and I enjoyed it. If it had been me , I would have bought a lottery ticket as soon as I got back to town, A person can't be any luckier than that. I would tend to agree with Idaho Ron about the divine intervention. The way this story reads, the bear dropped like it was hit by Thors' hammer at the shot. 
 I don't think that the story adds more support to the carrying a pistol for bear attack fire, on the  contrary, they had the pistol hanging in a tree. I would much rather have the 338 Win leaning against the tree if I am going to leave one. I bet that pistol never seems heavy or in the way again!!

I will say amen to the divine intervention.  A good gun and the prayer of a godly man are MUCH better than the gun by itself.  I take both when I go afield, and I would take and extra helping of both in AK.

I have edited the original post with new info I got from the author Doug White.  He says he thought the load used was a 280gr hard cast from Corbon.  I didn't have a lot of time to visit with Doug and since it wasn't his gun he wasn't real familiar with the ammo. I think he's mostly a rifle guy.

He says he's been told that the Anchorage gun shops are selling a lot more Corbon 44 mag ammo since this story got around.

made me feel better about the 265 gr Corbon ammo I have been carrying in my 41 mag for the last 4 years.

I dont post much in these bear proctection posts but this one is real and it just reinforces my opinion that nothing but cast bullet belong in hunting handguns. I tend to think it might have ended differently if he had that 44 loaded with 240 jhps or soft noses.

   I would agree with you if I lived in bear country, but here in Oh. where the biggest thing we have to hunt is deer I like the 240 gr. Serria HP. I don`t need any more penitration than I get with them and they do a real number on deer.

It would be interesting to know what CorBon load the guy used. I have tested both the 320 Hardcast and their 305 Penetrator. They are very good loadings. I have never tried the 280 Bonded. They recommend the 280 for elk and moose in their catalog. What ever load he used did the job. I am with Lloyd on this one its good thing they did not have that 44 loaded with 240 hollow points.

I would trust a hardcast out of a .357 over a hollowpoint out of a .454.  I have shot some trees with hollowpoints out of my RB .454 and have been less than impressed, although not surprised on their penetration.  You wanna rip him through, not give him a bruise.

 I was once out shooting my .44 navy BP and a guy asked me if I had ever used those balls on game.  I went out and picked up one of the balls after I shot it, it looked like a gum wrapped.  Lead that soft?  might kill a squirrel, at least knock him off the branch ;D
