Just showing off.
« on: November 27, 2006, 09:52:54 AM »
Thanksgiving day I made my first kill with a handgun. Shot a nice 3 pointer with my Lone Eagle 35 Remington. The deer was chasing a hot doe and he had no idea I was there. He wouldn't hold still so I had to shoot with him troting around a bit but I made a good shot at 50 yds and he didn't go far after that. Used a handload with 180 grain Hornady SSPB. Not a huge deer but a lot bigger than the Doe I shot last year in Muzzleloader season.

How do you like that Lone Eagle?  I have always wanted one, but never saw one first hand until last year.  Found one at Cabela's in 357 Maximum, and passed because the actions/barrels are almost impossible to find.  Sure wish I would have bought it....they wanted something like $325 for it.

I remember looking at them and trying to figure out if I wanted the LE or Thompson Contender....I was only 13 or 14 at the time, and gramps thought it best that I start with a ruger 22.
The problem with troubleshooting is....sometimes it shoots back!

I am very pleased with the gun. Picked it up 4 years ago at a gun shop, it was on consinment for $260.00. Came with a holster, simons scope, reloading dies and a box of reloads. Couldn't pass it up. Accuracy is as good as any rifle I own, will shoot into an inch at 100 yds from a bench with sandbags. The scope got changed out to a Leupold 4x and I got a newer style stock for it too. The trigger was tweeked a bit for an easier pull. I would like to find a barreled action in a smaller caliber to go on the spare stock, like 22 hornet or 223.

Great buck! Congratulations! Do you find that taking a deer with a handgun seems like a bigger trophy than taking one with a long gun? What kind of bullets did you use?

Can't say this deer was much of a challenge, just in the right place at the right time with this one. Distance was only 50 yds. The bullet was a Hornady 180 grain SSPB (single shot pistol bullet) handload. Being my first kill with a handgun I will remember it for a long time.
