Just another "which 1911" question.
« on: November 28, 2006, 08:43:39 AM »
Been thinkin about buyin a 1911 after the first of the year, and I've started to do my research into which one I should buy.

My dad had one when I was a kid, (30 yr's ago) and I enjoyed shooting it then.  He had a Colt, although I don't remember the exact model.

Anyway, I'm wanting a 5" barreled .45 ACP.  The Kimber Tactical Custom II is currently at the top of my list, although I also like the Gold Match II & the Custom Target II.  I like the fixed tritium sight on the Tactical though.

Other models that are on the list right now are the Para-Ordnance SSE-SP1, Colt gold cup Trophy.  I know there are more out there to look at, the assortment of 1911's is overwhelming (ain't it great) which is prolly why these questions get asked so much on this forum.  I'd be curious to hear any & all opinions, and if anyone has any experience with these models.

Have heard plenty of good things about the Springfield Armory pistols as well.  Hopin to keep it around a G-note, give or take a buck or 2.....

Don't forget to check out the Dan Wesson 1911's. I have one of their commander size "CBOB's which is an excellent value for your money. I paid 950.00 for mine. They are what I would call a production custom piece. They have "ED BROWN" parts fitted to them and I believe STI also. They are mildly dehorned and fitted very well. You have the option of .45acp or 10mm.
Beware of the man whom owns but one rifle, He more than likely knows how to use it.

Mine would be a vote for anything in a Kimber. I wouldn't be without mine. The Para is a good gun I just don't care for the trigger pull. That's just my personal prefference. Good luck and have fun with whatever you buy.

I second the vote for the Kimbers.  I own two and I am very happy with them.

Thanks for the input so far.  The Kimber Tactical Custom II really caught my eye.

I'll check out the Dan Wesson's as well.  My impression so far, from what I've read, is that the Springfield Armory's & Kimbers are kinda the favorite's being produced today......  But as I am taking my time before makin a purchase I don't want to rule anything else out.

I've bought guns before, then a little while later saw something else that caught my eye, and wished I'd waited a bit.  Kinda hard to stop when you have a nice firearm in yer hands, and the money in yer pocket...... ;D

Since this is just opinion, I'd vote for the Colt Gold Cup Trophy.  They are about the same money, you'll find less MIM parts in the colt, and a better resale if you ever happen to consider getting rid of it.  I have owned a SS Kimber Custom and it was a fine weapon (after I polished the feed ramp and changed springs).  But with a Colt there seems to also be more pride of ownership.  Your money, your choices.  I'm sure you will enjoy shooting a 1911!  It is addicting.  You can't stop with just one.  44 Man

Ive got a trophy and a gold match. There both excellent guns. My gold match is the most accurate 45 ive ever owned and its reliable. The trophy is the most dependable 45 ive ever owned. I dont know how many thousands of rounds have been through it and its never bobbled once! The only thing thats ever been replaced on it is the springs.

Went & looked at some Kimber's, Para-Ordnance, and Springfields yesterday.  Only saw one colt, and it was used....

Anyway.  As of right now, I'm kinda leaning toward the Kimber Eclipse Target model.....

Gonna keep lookin, as I prolly won't buy til Jan or Feb.

Thanks....

Let me ask a question.
Why does it have to be a 1911?
Now, I like a 1911 for a lot of different reasons and often have one handy.
I also enjoy shooting a 1911 and do it very often.
There are other designs, Sigs-HK's-Walthers, which do the same job but differently. Some would say safer and more reliably.
I would take a look at all of them--well I personally think, eventually, you will own another kind.
Blessings

Let me ask a question.
Why does it have to be a 1911?

For the same reasons I like shootin double trigger SxS's, my Sharps 1874, Hawken rifle, etc....  Something about the 1911 that I've always liked, but to tell ya the truth I couldn't put my finger on anything exactly.  My dad had one when I was a kid, and I remember shootin tin cans down at the river with it.  I'm a bit of a history nut, so there's something special about the 1911 for me.  And, from all the talk, publications, & tv shows, I'm not alone.  It's why I had to deer hunt with a 30-06 this year.  100th anniversary & all.  Guess I'm just kinda corny that way.  BTW....  Dropped a nice MO 9-point in it's tracks with my 30-06 this year.... ;D

I do have other more modern firearms, but right now, I have a 1911 itch to scratch...... ;)

Just about any of the Kimbers would be a good choice. I  own a couple. Both great guns, and well worth the money. The top of the line Springfields are worth a look as well. If I were buying a Kimber today it would be one of the Eclipse models. just like the look! I have not been impressed with the Para Ordanince 1911s. I have seen a lot of function problems with those. Just my observations. Enjoy the 1911 of your choice!

Another vote for Dan Wesson. I've got 2 and they are quality. Better IMO than my Custom TLEII.

The Kimber 1911's are pretty good pistols as are the Para's. I've had good luck with the Springfield Armory pistols also. My own preference is for the Colt 1911's, just because....I like 'em. I've had enough 1911's to figure out what causes most problems (I know, there's 50 or so books out there to tell you) and am mechanically inclined enough to fix them. I still believe that it's a case of the individual pistol and looking for the signs of improper assembly, fitting and tuning. My newest 1911 is a recent Colt Commander that is bone stock and will probably stay that way because it flat out works. After 3000 rds with only 2 malfunctions due to my own goofs at the loading bench (canted bullets bulging the case), and sub 2" accuracy at 25yds, I'm afraid to mess with it. That being said, for someone looking for their first 1911, the Kimbers are hard to beat since they come out of the box with most of the mods that people like.

I have been a 1911 shooter a long time.  I had a few "off" brands that all shot fine.  Hands down now I am a Colt person.  I had a stainless "off" brand that had about 3000 rounds through it and I used it for competition shooting.  I had invested allot of time and work tuning it and fitting it...... overall a good gun.  After a day at the range I was cleaning it and then volunteered to clean my fiends 1911 Colt.  His Colt had almost 30,000 rounds throuh it and it was a tack driving pistol.

While I was comparing the 2 guns I found mine was weariing badly.  The overall fit and finish was no where near the Colt.  The more I investigated it the worse my gun was looking and only about 10% of the overall rounds!  My old gun was traded in the next day and I purchased a Gold Cup.  I have never looked back.

Anyway, should be pickin it up as soon as my permits are ready at the end of the week.

Thanks for all the input.

BTW... For all you guys that pushed for the Kimber....  I bought one of those too....  9mm Pro-carry II.  This one is for my wife though... ;)

I like my new Auto-Ordnance Army WW2 copy 1911a1.  It shoots great and is reliable and dependable as any 1911/1911a1 out there for only $389.  The best 1911a1 i have ever owned and i still own it is my chinese norinco 1911a1.  Its the very first one that ever cycled/functioned properly for me.  I own two other new springers too but there no where's near as good as my norinco and auto-ordnance pistols are when it comes to dependability/reliability.  This proves to me we don't need to spend big bucks for a good 1911a1.

I had two colts in the past that were junk and as far as a motorcycle i'd go with the honda too my suzuki 1200 bandit is untouchable by any american made bike in smoothness, quality and speed anything after 95 MPH i'm all alone except for the youngins on there rockets they kept me company.

pretty soon americans will be buying cars and bikes and guns made in iraq and iran. I know that its impossible in this day and age to buy totally american or anything thats made totaly in america but for major new purchases like cars trucks bikes and guns a should look for an american product first and preferably a union made item. Theres just to many americans (your neighbors freinds and family) that are loosing jobs because of this. You can buy cheap and support some slave labor oversees company or pay a 100 bucks more and support your friends. Now i didnt post this to start a big argument and you too are allowed your oppinion. EVEN THOUGH ITS WRONG ;)

I have two springers one was manufactured here in the USA and my new G.I. 45 ww2 copy was manufactured in Brazil.(key start)  My new Auto-Ordnance army ww2 copy was manufactured in Mass, USA.  Now the best 1911a1 I have ever shot and owned is my Chinese Norinco 1911a1 45acp.  the steel is so good on these there sought after for doing builds too.

I'm retired now but my company has factories in every country and we have met and talked with most of them.  I find the Japanese culture right now is that they demand the newest, latest, greatest product out there besides the best quality product that there money can buy.  Its not about the cost, it has to be the best quality product and the latest design.

Now to me its about buying the best quality product at an affordable price and i don't cares who makes it or sells it. No one worried about me when i lost my job in the 80's its payback now and i'm lovin it.

Say goodby to winchester and who's next?  Remington?

I was hit really bad in the very first recession in 83, 84, 85 and part of 86.  In 83, 84 & 85 I worked only 3 months each year because of machine tools being imported at cheaper prices. The manufacturers purchased them anyway even though they couldn't do the same job.  Which once they found that out they sold the imported machine and purchased ours. The high interest rates pushed american companies to go that route too.  I really suffered by this happening and i was always buy american at all costs but i lost my job so many times and got kicked in the @ss so I buy nothing but imported products now.  Plus i want the best quality product too and it ain't ours.

Even Harley's are using front forks from JAPAN the showa forks are made in JAPAN and who knows what other parts besides the mikuni carbs and the electronics are made in japan too.  YUP then they advertise its MADE IN THE USA but in little letters it should say with parts manufactured in JAPAN.  They know who makes the best quality parts.  Just go to Daytona Bike Week and watch who is on the race track and who finishes and wins.  Of course we never see and american made bikes even finish the race thats very rare just to get a finish.  You have to think back when that little 350 Yamaha beat everything on the track too nothing could catch it.  Now the Japs are getting into Nascar this is going to be interesting????
