Scoping a Huntsman / Sidekick

I've seen printed here that the Huntsman / Sidekicks have to use high rings when mounting a scope. Is that because the hammer hits the octular lens housing? Has anyone played around with trying to come up with an idea to get medium rings to work? Just curious. Thanks.   RRM

Welcome to GBO! Medium rings will work if the power ring or ocular bell are shaped or positioned to clear the hammer. You can also modifiy the hammer to allow the use of even extra low rings. See the Low Profile Hammer mod link in the NEF Centerfire FAQ and Help sticky, there are 2 methods listed.

It is important that you get the proper base. I bought a base that did not come from H&R and it only has two cuts for the scope rings. They are too far forward to get proper eye relief. I am now ordering the base from H&R which has several cuts so that the rings can be set at the correct distance. It also helps to not order large bell scopes. I use Simons pro diamond shotgun scopes that are 1.5-5 power and they clear the hammer with medium height rings.

Keith is right on, see the difference in the H&R bases and the Weaver #82 base below, the middle base is the Ultra rail,  just used with huge scopes. Although you can easily cut cross slots in the Weaver #82, it has a flat spot on the rear 1" of the rail that puts the rear slot even with the second slot forward on the H&R rails.

Objective size makes little difference, there's plenty of room for a 50mm scope in medium Burris rings IF the power ring/ocular bell doesn't iinterfere with the hammer. The pic is a 6.5-20x50 Simmons WTC18 on a Handi-rifle, there's about 1/8" clearance at the hammer and AO, definately needs a hammer extension!
