Left Eye Dominant Right Handed Shooter
« on: November 29, 2006, 03:29:30 PM »
Does anyone know of an attachment that helps a shooter who is right handed but left eye dominant?  A friend told me he saw such a device but does not know where or what it looked like.  I am too old and clumsy to switch hands.  Does anyone have a suggestion to improve percentage of hits with this condition.  I shoot handguns and rifles very well but have always had difficulty with the shotgun.  I would deeply appreciate any help.
Thanks,
KL

There are off set stocks that will place the  receaver on the left side of your face.

Then there is an Eye patch for the left eye.

Try shooting off the left shoulder with a 410/20 gauge for a few weeks I made the change in my early 30's and have shot much much better.
Good luck
Mom, can I use Dad's deer rifle to shot pigeons off the watertower?

What you are speaking of is something to blur your vision from the left eye to the bead. It seems to work for some folks. I was speakign with an old guy in his 70s at the skeet range the other day who had gone to it and he said his scores are better now than ever. I have the problem but solved it more or less by stubbornly learning to shoot from my right shoulder with both eyes open. Yeah it was tough and some days I don't do it well and I'm a lot better at skeet where the targets are the same than on birds where they aren't.

What folks like the gentleman use is a round dot of frosted tape that just barely blurs the vision from the left eye to the bead. You'll have to experiement with placement to get it right.

I tried the left hand shooting and it was a horrible expericence I don't recommend. Bent stocks are definitely not the answer.

I was a gadget the other day that is basically a 'light-pipe'.  It's a fiber-optic device that will only align with the eye that SHOULD be aiming the gun.  It obscures the sight from the dominant eye.

My cross-dominance was caught VERY early and I was corrected then as my son has been.  I'm a life long left handed shooter and can't do it any other way.
Searching for the perfect left handed revolver.....

I have the same problem and I'm too old to learn new tricks (learning to shoot left handed). I put scotch tape on the left lens of my shooting glasses. Just enough so that you cannot see the barrel with the left eye. I can now shoot my shotgun with both eyes open and my peripheral vision to the left has improved. My skeet and trap scores improved. I also used this when bird hunting. It only took 2 or three shooting sessions to get used to this approach.
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.

Thanks for the replies and information.  I'll try the tape on the shooting glasses method this weekend.  My son is shooting clays now also and I would at least like to challenge him a little.  As it is going now, he will soon far outshoot me very soon.
Thanks again,
KL

My father and my son are both left eye dominant but right handed. My dad shoots left handed and has been doing so for years and is a very good field and skeet shooter. I am now just teaching my nine year old to shoot left handed and he is getting the knack for it with a daisy and a twenty two off the bench. It is a skill that has to be practiced and learned to master. It will just give you more excuses to burn ammunition. ;D

I am right handed and left eye dominant and shoot shotguns left handed.  I had a slight learning curve but am very comfortable now.

Browning make dots that are called "magic dots" that sticks to your lens with adhesive. Any larger shooting supply will have them

I have a lot of experience with this. My wife and daughter are both right handed and have dominant left eyes. I taught them both to shoot left handed. I have found that many people have trouble with eye dominance at least some of the time. My left eye will take over on me if I am tired, the light is poor and or the target is crossing from right to left. Low 3 is a problem for me at times. I find that if I ride a target, meaning that I swing longer then usual, the left eye will take over. The tape on the lens works well. You can start by putting some grease on your finger, mounting your gun and touching the lens exactly where you see the front bead. Once you find the right spot a small piece of frosted tape will work. At first it will be all you see but with practice it will seem to go away. Switching to left handed might end up easier than you think, with lots of shooting. In shotgun shooting the eyes are everything. Good luck and let us know how you make out, Shotgunner

i'm right handed with a dominate left eye.  I would strongly recommend learning to shoot left handed... it becomes more natural and there are no real disadvantages, particularly in wingshooting.

I would try switching hands too.  My dad corrected me when I was a little guy with a BB gun who couldn't hit crap.  Even though I'm right handed, and very much so, shooting lefty feels normal.  Practice, practice, practice.  I think switching hands would be easier than training an eye.
