.257 Weatherby load
« on: November 30, 2006, 02:54:27 PM »
I have a pretty good load for my brother's .257 WM, but I would like to have a pretty full case, is there a powder this can be accomplished with???  I don't like to have all the extra room in the case where you have to worry about how the powder is sitting in the case.  Thanks.

I tried AA8700 with a few types of 100 grain bullets.  Check your load manuals or Accurate's website.  It really fills the case.  I never got any accuracy out of it that was worth a darn.  Maybe it would do better with heavier bullets.  I can't remember how many grains of powder the manual recommended, but it was a lot more powder than I use with H4831.  Also tried IMR7828 with 117 grain bullets.  It did better than AA8700, but my H4831 load performed better.

I use RL25 with all my loads except the 87gr bullet I use RL22 for that. I don't load the 75gr bullet. All my loads are max loads for max FPS with my 257 WBY.

I use 62 gr of IMR 4831 behind a 120 gr Nosler Partition. Excellent accuracy, wonderful results with whitetail and groundhog hunting.

Yup, kinda like me. Also use H1000 with the 115gr Nosler.

I just uped my 87gr bullets load. Found load dada that says max load is a little more. Will try out and see how many FPS faster it will go. 3779 FPS

According to Alliant's website, that load is 2.5 to 4.5 grains over maximum, depending on the bullet used. http://www.alliantpowder.com/products/newCalibers/257_Weatherby_Mag.htm
http://www.alliantpowder.com/reloaders/RecipeDetail.aspx?title=Centerfire%20Load&gtypeid=2&weight=87&shellid=1058&bulletid=200

Although I used to do so (and I'm not the reload police), GB doesn't like anyone listing loads that are above those published by reliable sources.  The recommendation of specific over-max-listed loads should probably be done in private e-mails.

Hodgdon has a new powder out since this thread started - Hybrid 100V that you should consider for the 257 WM - consult Hogdon for load specifics.

two loads my weatherby moa likes are    63.5 grns of imr 4831 with a 115 partition   gives me .78 in.   and 68.5 grns of RL 22 with a 110 accubond gives me .55 in.    barnes bullets  shoot  really bad 1 1/2 or worse.

I'm thinking about building a .257 W.  I've never shot one and want to know what the recoil is like.  I'm figuring I'll only shoot max or near max loads.  After all, what reason to own a .257 if I'm not going fast?  I already have a 6mm Rem...  Fast but not as fast...  I'm planning on a bolt gun, probably a somthing with DM but maybe a single shot.  I'm figuring on a fairly heavy 26" barrel.  I really don't like anymore recoil than an '06 for hunting and would definitely like less for practice/bench.  I'm figuring I can come out with a rifle at about 10.5 pounds or so.  I'm not worried about the weight.  I don't intend this to be a hiking rifle.  I want to use it that way I'll just have to embrace the suck and carry it...

What would you compare the recoil of YOUR rifle to?

Why in the world would you want such a heavy rifle in a mild recoil round like this? Recoil is about like a .270 Winchester really in rifles of similar weight meaning a bit less than a .30-06 with most common bullet weights in the '06.

Mine is a limited edition Remington 700 LSS with 26" standard contour barrel SS metal work and gray laminated stock. My '06 is identical except has a 24" barrel and clearly recoils more.

By the way, if a load shoots well, I don't agonize too much if the case isn't chock full.  Also, though some of my loads are hot, they're only hot because they shoot the best that way.  My criteria for how good a load is, is base on accuracy and not on bullet velocity.

GB,
Mainly cuz it's would be a rifle for fun.  Just to have and shoot some.  Maybe hunt a bit with it.  I don't mind the weight.  I bench over 300, leg press 1500, still squat over 400.  10 pounds ain't that much.  By the time you add body armor, plates, kevlar, ruck, ammo etc... now that's a load.  A day pack and a 10 pound rifle is just not that much.  One thing I really DON'T like much is recoil.  Getting ready for first shoulder surgury (right one, wouldn't ya' know).  Want to be gentle on that one for a while...
