Primer Carrier

Hey Guys,
I am a muzzleloader virgin but would love to get into it to extend my wisconsin season.  I was looking at the H&R Sidekick.  I don't need a antique looking thing but I just feel like a regular looking gun would be better for me.  Some of the front loaders out there look like something out of star wars.  My concern is with the primer carrier thing.  I have seen the rifles in stores but can't quite imagine how that thing works, mostly because I dont' understand why it is necessary?  Why didn't they just make it so the darn primer fit right in?  How long do those primer carrier things last?  1 shot? 10?  100?.  What do you guys thing of them.  What do you think is a fair price for this rifle?  Also I hear a lot of problems with muzzleloader rust, do you emiminate that with a stainless rig?  Or is the powder soo corosive that even that won't help.  I know you have to clean every time I was just wondering if the stainless helped with more than just inclimate weather?  Sorry for the rookie questions.  I would appreciate any suggestions you have.  Other rifle suggestions would be great too.  What about the winchester rifle, I found a pretty good deal on one of those.  I just want something relatively inexpensive but not a piece of junk to get started.  After I do it a little and develope my own taste I can upgrade.  Can never have too many guns!

I have a Huntsman and I ordered the .25ACP conversion. It replaces the breechplug with one that accepts a .25ACP brass which can be loaded with small rifle primers. The .25 brass is a lot easier to handle than the standard 209 primers and it eliminates the need for the primer carrier. From what I understand the standard carriers last for more than one shot but I had such good luck with the .25 conversion on my T/C Omega I just started with it on the Huntsman from the git-go. The ramrod on the Sidekick and Huntsman is a little weak and flimsy but there is a replacement made by Hubbards Outdoor products that is much superior and is almost a requirement for the rifle to really be perfect. Once I got mine set up with the .25ACP conversion and the Hubbards rod it is a sweetheart. I like it as well as my Omega and sometimes I think I may like it better. With the initial cost and with the conversions it is still way less than what the Omega cost me. Personally I like break action shotguns and the Huntsman feels like a standard single shot shotgun which I started hunting with so it is very familiar.

I love the primer carrier in my huntsman.  Its much easier to get in and out. And I keep a couple in my pocket with primers in them for fast reloads. Plus they seal for no blow back. There easy to handle with gloves. There's just no neg that I see with them.   I've got over 80 shots with my orginal carrier I dont think they were out.

    You'll like these primer carriers, easy loading even with gloves on. I've used mine over & over and you can easily tell the rifle is primed.  If you use Win. T7 209 primers thats all you need.

No luck this year. Had to cut my hunt short due to running into Thanksgiving. The last morning I ranged 14 cows (I had an antlerless tag) at 117 yards. I was not sure enough of my Omega at 117 yards. I know where it is at 100 but couldn't take the chance. I let them go and the herd bull was walking off track from the herd and he walked up to my flimsy ground blind and almost stepped on me. I was less than 10 feet from him and he never knew I was there laying down behind a log. If only I had a bull tag. Well there is always next year if I get lucky enough to get drawn again. I am going to spend more time with the Omega at longer distances.  Could have shot a cow with a small calf but would not do that either.

I really like the primer carriers I have a quick referance if the gun is primed or not. One day I will get the 25ACP breach plug... But for the near future i am fine with the Primer Carriers. They seem almost indistructable, I still have my originals..

Yes, I'm surprised that T/C hasn't came out with something to make it easier to handle the shotgun primers, yet? They seem to have a bell or whistle for everything else. And, while I'm on my soap box, why not a nylon, inline dedicated possibles bag?
