What do you carry in your poss'bles bag?
« on: December 01, 2006, 03:27:21 AM »
I've finally found a nearly ideal hunting spot where I can reasonably succeed by still hunting, which is my favorite method if conditions allow it.

This has posed a new challenge for me.  I'm finding that I need to bring water and food with as I am often gone much of the day.

My poss'bles bag does not have room for much food or water. Plus the weight of the powder horn and poss'ble bag is about as much as I'll tolerate on my shoulder.

What do you guys use to carry water and food? I'm considering a belt bag since I wear a big ol' 2" leather belt around my blaze orange capote, but the belt bags I've seen don't seem practical for carrying a water bottle.  Or are there special period-style water bottles?  I suppose I could visit an old gut pile and pick out the bladder...but how do you seal them?

Can you use a gourd?  How do you carry that?

Black Jaque, I don't know how much you would want to pay for a period canteen but here's a place that sells them.  I'm sure there are others but I can't think of them at the moment.

Hmm that tin flask might be worth a look.  I can't see carrying a quart of water slung over my shoulder by such a skinny rope.  That would begin to dig in after a while.

If there was some way to fasten that to a belt, yet be easy to remove so you don't have to unbuckle the belt every time you need a drink.

Or carry it in a belt bag, but would it take up all the room for munchies?  Did I mention I'd like to also squeeze a small pair of binoculars in the belt bag?  In certain doe-only hunts, binoculars are handy for making certain of the target.

....just thinking out loud...could use the help thinking...

I have kidney stone problems if I don't drink enough water, so I gotta carry it with me, been packing a bota for years, it can be made to look at traditional as you please, it's flexible enough to squeeze the air out so it doesn't slosh and make a bunch of noise which isn't conducive tp stealth when still hunting, and you can carry as little or as much as you want depending on how long you'll be on the hunt. A wider leather strap would be the first change I'd make on this one....

I used a small WW2 shoulder bag this year, but am looking for a bigger bag. I am doing the still hunting thing too, and find I need way more stuff, than when I hunted with friends. I have a small strip of tarp to slide the deer out on, that I want to carry along, with water+ food, etc. I enjoyed this years hunt more than ever, and plan on staying with it.

Not bein' historically correct a bladder in one of the knapsacks oughta fit under your blaze orange capote.  ;)

what  your looking for is called a haversack  or a knapsack. now keep in mind a knapsack is not a haversack and a haversack ins not a knapsack  . however they both do about the same thing .

the one i use is a 3 button . its 10 X11 and in it i can hold my fire starter , a  medium bota bag, a  pouter  cup for making tea, and even a sandwich or some dry foods to eat through the day .
This I s really one of the many bag types know genericly as a a  possibles bag  .  What we call a possible bag now days is really what’s called a rifle bag or shoot bag   .
Now if your going over night , most everything can be kept in side you bed role  which is what a trumpline is for . In this case the only thing that would be in your haversack would be things you might need to get to  through the day  and would not want to unroll your bedroll to get to..
here are you a couple links to look at .  they are not that hard to build
