buying through the cmp

 any one know about yhis   are as any of you ever bought a rifle from them  im looking for a m1 thought it might be a good place to look for a nice rifle

I visited the Camp Perry, Ohio store last year.  They are great folks to deal with and extremely helpful.  I've since made a couple of calls to obtain information and have found the same courteous assistance.  All the information you need is on their website including order forms and the qualifications you need to make a purchase.  The web site also provides up to date inventory information and detailed descriptions of the various grades of the firearms they sell.  Right off hand I don't know the official URL to their site, but if you Googled CMP.com you should be able to find the link to the actual site.

If you are anywhere within driving distance, I would suggest a visit.  Its a great place to be and the folks there will dazzle you with their knowledge of U.S. Military firearms.  They also have throat erosion gauges that you can borrow.  Should you decide to visit, have all your paperwork in order before you get there.

I have 2 of their M1's, I bought the first one in 1997 and the second in 2003. Thay are getting down toward the bottom of the barrel. Don't get me wrong, they are supposed to have M1's for a few years yet but they don't have the "in new condition" ones anymore. Also the ones from Denmark are getting slim. All the '03's & 1917's are gone.

The requirements can be a pain. You have to particapate in a highpower shoot. Be a US resident and be a member of a gun club. If you have a C&R FFL it covers the shooting portion and you can become a member of the GCA (Garand Collectors Association) for $20 a year to cover the gun club requirement. Once that is covered the rest is easy, just fill out the paperwork, send it in and they send an M1 to your home.

What could be better?

I've bought a Garand from the DCM and a Remington 1903 from the CMP. Both were as advertised.
