What scope?
« on: December 01, 2006, 02:19:25 PM »
Ok I gave up on purchaseing mounts for my older ruger and purchased a hunter model.  Now what scope, I believe all my shots will be no more than 80 yards.  Not sure on what magnification to get or size lens.  I have looked at leupold and nikon 2x20's and a weaver 2x28 also a 2-6x32 bushnell.  I did not look at burris becasue their cross hairs seam to thinner than others.  A 20mm lense just seams really small, I'm more intersted in it light gathering abilities and eye relief.  I have not seen any of these scopes in person.  I am 5'9" I would think the eye relief will mater how far your arms reach or does this not really matter.

Need advice, Thanks Mike H

Get the 2-6x32 bushnell Elite 3200 you will love the constant 20-inch eye relief.

I would go with the bushnell 2x6 also.

How much difference (other than price) is their between the bushnell trophy and the elite.  The trophy does not have the constant eye relief but does have a wider field of view with the same power settings.  I'm guessing the elite will be a brighter scope.

Thanks Mike H

I have both, I do not notice the field of view but when I turn the Trophy up to higher power settings and my revolver gets closer to my face I notice more of all the spitting out of the front of the cylinder. The Trophy is said to be not as strong as the Elite but I have the Trophy on my 445 Supermag since 1992 and it has held up to the recoil, just dont like it that close to my face when I crank it up.

When I purchased my 3200 I found the lowest price on the web and asked my local gun shop if they would match the price, they said no they would beat it.

This is the lowest price I found on the net.
Elite 3200 2-6X Pistol Scope (Silver) $244
My local shop sold it to me for $239.00

I am really liking the T/C 2.5-7 lighted scopes. I have one on my 15 inch 209x50 and have taken a lot of deer with it. If you have trouble seeing the cross hairs you can just turn it on and they light up red. they come with a true life time warrenty I got a POS one in a trade I sent it back in and they sent me a brand new one no questions asked

I put my first scope on a handgun in 1968. I have been shooting both open sighted handguns and scoped handguns ever since. I have come to the concluesion that when shooting from a rest that a scoped handgun is much prefered, but when shooting off hand at moveing targets open sights are far better. While there is no doubt that a scope will give you a much more presice point of aim handgun scope have such a small field of vision that getting on the target is alot harder than with a rifle scope and for that reason scoped handguns make it harder to hit moveing targets at any range. This year I have got 2 deer so far with handguns. Both were moveing and both were shot with a scoped handgun. It was a .357 max. with a 27 in. high by-pod. The first was a good clean kill as I was able to have a good level rest for the by-pod, the second was was a gut shot that that lead to alot of head aches befor I got the deer. Had I had one of my open sighted .44 mags. on the second deer I am sure that I would have taken the deer with alot less trouble. My prefered handgun scope is the 2 1/2 x 8 Leupold. I carry it on 2 1/2 and crank it up to 8 for long range shots on slow moveing or standing targets from a stand, but when walking always prefer an open sighted gun.

All twelve of my pistol length Contender and Encore barrels wear the now discontinued Bausch & Lomb Elite 3000 2x6's and I've got three or four more ratholed for future barrels.

They were / are excellent scopes and one of the features I really like is the constant eye relief through all the power settings......no tunnel as the power is increased.

The B & L was replaced by the currently available Bushnell Elite 3200 2x6 and it is also an excellent scope from what I've read.

All but one of my deer hunting handguns have Leupold 2x's and the other has a Weaver 2x.  The Leupold is my favorite because I can find my targer quickly and I like the heavy crosshairs and I can still see a deer through it at 1/2 hour after sunset in the woods which is the end of legal hunting time here.  For 100 yards and under I see no reason to have more than a 2x to hunt deer.  The variable does give you the choice of a higher power but it makes a revolver very big and heavy in my opinion and I just do not feel that the high magnification is needed for under 100 yards.

My handgun optics go all the way from red dots to assorted 2X, 2.5X8, and 3X9's.  All work well if matched well with the caliber and game hunted.  For what you're asking I'd go with the Leupold 2X.  What I like about it on a short-range gun is the ease with which it brings all into view quickly and the crosshair is just right.  Burris reticle is too skinny for quick or brush work.  Red dots are really good, also, but have poor light gathering abilities.  The dot shows up well but the field of view gets poor in low light.  Bigger variables are great for longer range applications but not needed for close range shooting.

I started out with a Bushnell 2X6 on my BH Hunter, but replaced it with a Millet red dot because it's much faster on target than any scope I've looked at. You just raise it into your line of sight and it's there ready to break the shot. My Hunter was one of the first run of them so I've had it for 10 + years. The Millet has been on it for 9 of those years, and is still going strong. All of my shots have been from 10 to 75 yards. I've felt no handicap from the lack of magnification in the red dot. My own opinion is that it's faster than even the iron sights for me.
