308 Compact or Ultralight
« on: December 01, 2006, 07:09:44 PM »
Like the subject lines says, I am looking at getting a 308 and cant decide between the Compact or Ultrlight.  Aside from Ruger I might consider a Remington Mountain Rifle or Model 7.  Chime in guys.

I have looked at the Browning TI. Titanium construction makes this gun very light. Short action calibers only, like the 308, 300 short mag and even 325 short mag. Find a store with one in stock then handle it. Also go to Browning website.

I have the Compact. I've used it for 3 deer season and really appreciated its compactness in the woods. There is some velocity loss with the short barrel. However this can be mitigaged by the use of fast burning powers like 3031. Factory ammo seems to be using fast burning powders. I'm guessing that I'm getting about 2500 fps with the short barrel. This is about 300 Savage velocities, and I am happy with that.

Also, I appreciate the 12.5" length of pull of the Compact stock. Until you've used  a short lop, you can't appreciate how it enhances the handling qualities of the rifle.

I'm supremely happy with mine.

I also have the ruger compact in 308, an excellent gun and a tack driver I use it for pig hunting and the small package really allows me to carry it well through bush and allows for quick shots
