accidently double loaded
« on: December 02, 2006, 02:17:10 AM »
I have a Knight MK-85 which I believe I accidently double loaded with powder and powerbelt.  I'm going to have either pound them out or get a bullet puller and pull it.

I'm leaning towards pounding them out.  My questions is should I pound them out towards the breach which would go over the threads for my breach plug or should I pound them out towards the muzzle?

THanks

I have done it one before also. I pushed them toward the breech area, it is a shorter distance.  I have also used my air compressor with one of the air nosel's with the rubber tip on the breech plug to push them out. Worked great, but be careful were you point the barrel, they some times come out faster than expected.  ;)

DO NOT POUND THEM OUT!

There is a person in the local gun club missing part of a foot because the powder under compression went off as it was hammered on. Try a bullet puller first, then air, but do NOT pound on it.

It should not need to be pounded out. The first load of powder will drop out when the breech plug is removed. Bullet puller seldom work with the newer Derlin tipped bullets. A steady push with the ram rod should drop the bullet out of the breech plug area. The second load of powder will then fall right out and the second bullet will follow.

Redhawk,

When the accident happened he had pulled the breach plug and dumped the powder, but the breach plug opening was smaller that the sabot so it couldn't be pushed out, so they hit it and it went boom. Now the powerbelts from what I understand are slightly undersize so you might be able to push it out.

But I said not to pound it out because  Myerslake2005 said he was thinking about it. Myerslake, let us know how it goes and how you get it out.

Compressed air is not a good thing. Air = oxygen! Fuel and oxygen = boom!!! A can of CO2 is recogmended! You should have no problems pulling the breech plug, dumping the powder, slowly pushing the PB out the breech, and so on. Be careful. Think. Then be careful.

So

You are trying to proof test your barrel??
LOL
We have all been there OR with no powder at all.

It takes 3 components to have a combustion, oxygen, fuel and ignition source. There is only 2 of the 3 involved with compressed air.  ;)

I doubt that moving a bullet 4 inches in a barrel is going to cause enough friction to set off powder. Now compression can cause an explosion, but it would take a lot of compression to do that. I load my 45-70 with black powder and compress it  0.50. That is a lot of compression in a case.

Myerslake2005, did you get the bullets and powder out?

Tried the compressed air pushed the original powder charge out thr breachand the air leaked aorund the sabots so I didn't get a good seal.  Ended up taking a wood dowel just under the diameter of the barrel and lightly tapped it with a hammer and pushed the bullets out the muzzle end.  Worked out well and now the gun is sighted back in without the use of double charges.  Thanks for the input.

At least you noticed it before firing the gun. I ended up marking my ramrod with a line so I can make sure it goes in completely every time. Glad it all worked out for you.

I did the same thing at the range once. I pulled the breech plug out and removed the bottom charge and had to use a ball puller to remove the Shockwave sabots. I couldn'nt push them through the breech. It took quite awhile to fix the problem.
