Preferred primer for BPCR loading?
« on: December 02, 2006, 09:24:11 AM »
Gents and Madams,

Winter months are bullet casting and cartridge loading/relaoding periods.

Many brands of primers exist and personal choices vary by geographical area, results, lack of good results, personal experiences or rumor.

Now is the chance for accomplished shooters and serious loaders to express their opinions on this never ending subject.

Thanks,

From the Land of Enchantment,

I find Federal Magnum work the best for me.

When I got involved in BPCR, the established shooters in this area (West Central Minn) all suggested / used Remington standard large pistol primers. No reason given, and I have had such good results with them, that I have never tried anything else.

The main problem with using Large Pistol primers is that they seat shallower than a rifle primer.  When the round goes off they slam back into the breech block and eventually leave an indentation at that spot.  At this point you would need to have your breach block drilled and a high tensile steel insert installed to correct the problem.  The CCI BR2 primer is the LEAST powerful rifle primer available and may be just the ticket instead of the Large Pistol primer.  Of course, the proof is in the pudding and everyone's rifle is different as to what it likes.  MY 40-65 loves the BR2 and my 45-70 doesn't, preferring the Federal 215.

And then there are the fellas that put in the Federal 215 with an "over-the-primer" newspaper wad.  I haven't figured that one out yet...

I ran out of Federal Magnums, but had CCI Mags.  I tried them and the Federals on the same day.  It appeared that the CCI's shot about 1 1/2" to the left of the Federals and was just a little bigger in group size.  It is a 50 mile trip to get primers so I am sorta stuck with what I have until I can get to town.

I'm new to the world of BPCR but the best group I have fired yet from a Sharps repo is while using CCI Large Pistol primers.

I've always wondered why guys use a pistol primer over a rifle primer? Isn't a hotter spark what we want? After all the majority in the survey use Fed. magnum rifle. I've never heard a reason.
If liberals knew what they were missing, they’d give up drugs, sex and rock-n-roll for shooting and hunting. But then the rest of us would never draw an elk tag, so to hell with 'em!

You guys might be interested in an article I recently authored titled Large Pistol Primers & Over-Primer Wads in BPC Rifles.  If so, go to the link below.  Once you’ve finished reading the article, click on the “Back to Articles Page” and check out the other articles and my Book on the Browning and Winchester BPCRs.
