Anybody that has seen my posts knows I like the Winchesters pretty well, but I couldn't resist. It is a sweet little pre-safty 1894 in 44mag. It needed a little tlc, but I've got it to shooting and have done a little smothing up of the action. Now I'll be able to do a comparision of the two model 94s. My initial findings are as I always figured. The Marlin is a little smoother, but there is no serious speed advantage over the Winchester with black powder loads, at least as far as I can see. I am gonna use both next week at the NAR members only shoot and see how they do.

So Holiday ya say the May shoot is members only? I had toyed with trying to come back up then but still haven't gotten the shotgun belt from Big Ed and still haven't done anything to be sure that Bronco will make it back up the hill into Grant. Liked not to have on the way back last time. Dunno what's up with it. I did get my holster belt back in a slightly larger size. Good thing. When I was at the doctor's office yesterday getting some shots and medications for a pulled muscle in my back I weighted in at 271 pounds. Looks like I'm still going in the wrong direction.

Did you ever get any results from the March shoot? I'd like to know how I did. Heck I don't even know how scores are posted as a comparison really. Did they count my hits vs. misses? Time was super slow I know.

Any excuse for a new toy is a good'un!!! 'Specially when its fer scienitfic experimentin'!!!! Have fun with thea new marlin, and let us know what ya figger out twixt the two.

This is the third time I have tried to post, maybe it will work this time. The May shoot is our annual Members Only shoot. Come on up in June. It may be hot, but we will have fun anyway! Scores are based on raw time. Misses and procedurals count as added time to the raw time. Marshall, I hate to tell ya this, but you were'nt last!

Well, I used her to test out some old 44 mags I had loaded up with bp that have been sitting around. Had a few problems with jams, but they turned out to be bullets seated too long. Tried some factory ammo and she done fine. Tomorrow I intend to load up some new stuff and get ready for Saturday and Sunday. I am gonna have to seat these a bit deaper than what I did for my old Rossi I used to have, but the good news is that she will feed 44 specials without a hitch. I have refinished the stock and cleaned up the outside as best as I can. I check out Marauders Gunsmithing pages and got a few tips on polishing up the internals a bit. The old girl has potential. We shall see how much Saturday!

Congrats on the new FISH rifle. I use an EMF Rossi Carbine in .44 magnum for BP. The only thing I have been doing different is heavily inside neck champhering the cases. Has anyone else done this? I can shoot the rifle 60 times and clean the soot out of the action with a Q-Tip.

Howdy Holiday,
I went on and intalled a one-piece firing pin. Don't know if it made it any quicker but it did give something to spend $$ on. :grin:
Have been some reports of them (the orginial ones) breaking so decided to nip the "problem" in the bud.

Well, I will agree that a toggle linked and short stroked win/copy is smooth and sweet, I will stick with my marlins.
I never have problems, the stroke is short enough for me. I did a do it yourself action job and the one piece firing pin too. I am pretty much sold on them. Maybe it gets down to what you are used to. I will never figure out why they were not allowed in classic cowboy class. I would have shot that class, had they kept it to one sixgun and BP only, with a marlin and the SXS. That would have been plenty classic cowboy to me. Remember Marlins horse and rider ads? Well, as it is, here I am a senior and sticking it out in frontiersman, having retired the cartridge guns for this year. :-)
