Unertl 15x Ultra Varmint Scope
« on: December 02, 2006, 07:53:34 PM »
I recently started to open up my dusty gun safes and begin to use some of the items that have not seen daylight in several decades.  I have entered into an early retirement and can think of nothing more enjoyable than to use some of these items and to start to 'live again.'

I have an unused Unertl 15x 2" Ultra Varmint Scope mounted with Unertl mounts and rings on an also unused Remingon Model 700 Varmint BDL (heavy barrel) with Canjar set trigger, glass bedding, etc. etc.,  The question that I have is this:  is the fixed power 15x going to be very limiting, i.e., too powerful for relatively short ranges?  I will be using this combo primarily within the State of WA, both on the East and West side of the Cascade Mountains for coyotes, badgers, etc.

Thanks for the help.

sounds like a sweet set up.and just great for squirrels and PDs and other little ground critters that live in towns.and would work well for coyotes at longer ranges.heck at any range as long as you can see fur in the scope.but I really think for calling coyotes that might be a little to much power.but if you made your set ups where you could see them coming for ever..it would be sweet..good luck and enjoy your new found toys..
my huntin rifle is safe from confiscation only while my battle rifle protects it.

I tried using the same setup and didn't like it. To awkward and heavy for fox & coyote especially at 150 yard or less. If you need to focus  it is really difficult and slow in the field. Even a 10X can be too much, say at 40 feet. I still have the scope but rarely use it. Great for long range bench shooting.

JHT, I think you are in luck to own one of those Unertl scopes. I have used the same scope for 46 yrs now and loved every min. of it. All you have to do is focus the scope under 100 yds for short shots and refocus for longer shots, not a problem with me. That is what that scope was built for. They no longer build that scope anymore. The last one that they built was almost a 1000.00. Carl L.

Carl L.,

I will have to try your suggestion of correctly focusing the scope for the various distances that I use and I will get back to you with the results.

You are 100% correct in saying that I am "in luck to own one of those Unertl scopes."  As you well know, not only are these scopes top-notch in quality, but they are truly a working piece of artwork, beautifully designed.

Thanks,

Jay
