17 HRM on coyotes
« on: December 03, 2006, 09:42:38 AM »
Has anyone used a 17 HRM on coyotes? I am having alot of coyotes on my deer lease and I want to ellimate them without make a lot of noize. I am mainly hunting some harwood bottoms where my shots will be no longer than 100 yards. I have several 22 caliber rifles (ceneterfire) but I was wondering about the 17 HRM.

I can only tell you what I've read and most say even the heavier .22 magnum is too weak.  I watched 17 HRM blow up prairie dogs and I've no doubt it could kill coyote but...

If your thinking about buying a new rifle what about a NEF single shot in .22 Hornet? They're cheap, certainly accurate enough for 100 yards and a hornet makes less noise than a .223 would. (GO has a seperate forum for NEF fanatics which you may want to visit for more info)

I will admit I have taken my .22 mag out on rare occasion with the intention of popping a coyote but I fully understood I was most likely under gunned and needed a lung shot.

Even this small red fox went farther than I ever thought he could with a 25-06 hit. He was hit a tad too far back.

There are several previous threads on the subject, use your own best judgement whether it's a reasonable choice for your needs. If I were to choose to use it, I'd opt for the 20gr XTP or Gamepoint loads, although many have been killed with the Vmax or TNT, I think the heavier controlled expansion bullets would be a better choice, but the Hornet would be better still IMO, if you want to keep the noise down and want a quick, humane kill. ;)

This is a subject that has been discussed over and over.

I've had the v-max fail to expand on crows, a complete pass through........I've also had them expand and perform great....I can't explain the inconsistancy of the round, but I've noticed it several times.......

The .17HMR has is ney sayers......and also those who think it more than enough for coyote...........

Has it, and will it kill a Coyote?  Yes........but there are those who have had poor results with the round on coyotes too...........

My own personal opinion..........put it in the right spot and most of the time your fine.........but I'd pick a larger cartridge if I had a choice......

Booyah, welcome to the forum, Glad to have you aboard.

I can not say from experience, But if i was buying a gun for what you are talking about i would probably get the 22 Hornet. It's quiet and will do you a good job. Good luck.......Joe........

I agree with everyone on the shot placement is important, but I have always felt that shot placement is always big prioity over big caliber.  I am trying to get rid of the coyotes without make alot of extra noise during deer season. I dont feel like a 22 LR or 22 Mag is good enough. I no longer have a 22 Hornet as I didn't like reloading the thin little cases that you get with a Hornet. I sold my Hornet and I have bought a 221 Fireball which is a little faster than the Hornet is a very very accurate round. I like it so much that I have 3 rifles in the 221 and I like them better than my 223 rifles which I have 3 of these and they will shot just as good as my 221 Fireballs. All will shot smaller than 1/2" groups at 100 yards. The 223 will shoot futher, but where I am deer hunting a 100 yard shot is about as far as I can shoot. I am try to keep it quite as possible but I want the rifle caliber to be adequate. If I cant hit where am shooting, it want matter what I am shooting. The on thing I didn't know which some of you have pointed out is the difference in the bullet weights. I did not know that the 17 HRM had more than one choice. I thought the 17 Vmax was the only bullet. I feel like the 20 grain would be a good choice. Good enough that now I am going to get me a rifle. But you can bet as soon as deer season is over my Fireballs will be taking out the coyotes.

There's also a 20gr FMJ, be sure not to pick it up in error. ;) Midsouth has most 17hmr ammo except the 20gr XTP in stock, they list their 17M2 ammo on the same page.

I have taken several hunters out to shoot pds and call coyotes.they took the new .17hmr at the time.the hunters are avid hunters and very good shots.and  I have seen shots taken at 100 plus yards and dump them (EL COYOTE) the only movement from the yote was to the ground.shots I have seen, placed into the chest on frontal shots and right behind the shoulder angleing to the front of the animal.seems that llittle bullet just dumps all it's energy in the animal.I have shot two at closer ranges. The bullet will take them out.and should work well for what you want to do untill you can use a larger rifle.,,But as all has said.shot placement will be the key to sucsess..I am  of the opinion that the .17HMR is really not suited for the larger animals.ie: ELCOYOTE
my huntin rifle is safe from confiscation only while my battle rifle protects it.
