Are all "New Model Blackhawks" convertible?
« on: December 04, 2006, 10:27:22 AM »
I found a deal on a 45 that I just couldn't pass up.  I have a question though.  If the cylinder is removable, why wouldn't the 45acp cylinder work in it as well?  How do you identify a convertible??  Did I get a convertible, and just not know it?
The problem with troubleshooting is....sometimes it shoots back!

Not not all are convertables.  Those designated with a "X" in the model number are the convertable models.  Typically they've been available in a 45/45 model and a 357/9mm model although others were also produced.  In theory, a 45acp cylinder could be dropped in and work fine so long as the timing was correct.

I bought a Vaquero Bisley 45 colt stainless. I had a spare blue steel 45 acp cylinder that dropped right in and indexed up and shot accurately.

If you received two cylinders, you got a convertible. Call Ruger records department and by the serial number,  they'll tell you if the gun was shipped as a convertible. Many new model Blackhawks will work with cylinders from other new model guns and lock up fine. If it's a convertible you want, just look for a new model 45acp cylinder on ebay.

I have a new in the felt bag and box Ruger New model Blackhawk/old model vaquero 45 ACP cylinder I would sell or consider trades.  This should be fitted by a competent gunsmith.  It has never been fired.  Ed (wilded@austin.rr.com)

Most people don't use the extra cylinder so lots of them are floating around.  If I could get free 9MM or free .45ACP, I'd probably buy one.

No sir, don't know where you learned that, but it's wrong.

I bought a new conv .45Colt/acp set this July and the ser # is: 48-267__

There's no X in the ser number of this set.

Wish you well,

George

Excuse me but you sir are the one wrong.  Reread my post...I didn't say there was to be an "X" in the serial number but rather in the model (catalog) number.    If your setis new the box label should read either BN44X or BN455X.
