Cheap Cannons
« on: December 05, 2006, 02:59:18 PM »
I was wondering what is a good website to order a small cannon for under a $100. I want one that is fully functional and that shoots actually ammo. Ive already been to cannon-mania and was wondering if there were any other good sites?

A hundred bucks is not much for a finished cannon.  If you are at all handy, you should consider a kit.

Dixie Gun has kits under $100. Read the reviews before buying.

check out http://www.brooks-usa.com  .

The barrels are fully functional, and tend to be built on stroger side.

If you make a carrage yourself, you will stay under $100

Check this out:

I built one of these twenty-odd years ago, and here it is:

It's a pretty easy kit, looks good, and will fire .490 round balls.  At $95 I think its about as cheap as you can go for a working cannon.  There is also a naval version using the same barrel for $90.

I have no idea if the guy is still in business or what his name is.  He had a small foundry near Peach Bottom (lancaster county) Pa and would make bronze cannon barrels and some semi finished and finished cannons.  I purchased a barrel from him yrs back at the Baltimore Antique Gun Show.    30 inches long, 1.25 bore and the barrel weighed about 80 lbs.  I made a naval carriage for it.  I fired it once, on July 4th, 1994, in Falls Church VA where I lived.  A charge of 200 grains of 1f and a heavy cardboard wad, took a branch off the neighbor's tree and broke seven windows down the street.  Needless to say, I haven't desired any additional problems after that expensive episode.   I do wheel out my smaller cannon and fire it every New Year's eve.  That one is a 75 bore.
