.375 JDJ in rifle configuration
« on: December 05, 2006, 06:45:01 PM »
I am looking into purchasing a >375 JDJ rifle barrel for my encore.
Anyone with firsthand experience loading and shooting this caliber?
Looks like an all around stomper to me. ;)

I have loaded it for a friend in a pistol.  Do not have the load data here but we chose the Nosler Accubond....I think 250gr?  Will have to look up other info at home.  I loaded several different powder checks at different velocities but he could only handle a very mild load in the 250gr.

When I worked up the loads, my right thumb had a fracture from slowpitch softball.  Shooting full house loads brought tears to my eyes.  since the thumb has healed, I can handle anything from his 375JDJ.  It is a wonderful deer and hog round.  Everything has been DRT.

I had a .309JDJ and case forming was a simple, one pass through a 308 win. die to neck it down and fit to chamber, light fire forming load, then cases were ready for reloading. JD says that the .375 is the easiest to form, one lubed .444 marlin case through the sizing die then load it, done.

I have a 14" Contender barrel (SSK).   I am very happy w/ Sierra 250gr and Hornady 270 gr bullets.  Took a whitetail a few years ago w/ a 250 Sierra and AA2520 powder.   Mine is mag-na-ported and comfortable to shoot,  not too loud either.

have one in 26" encore heavy BBL, love it!!!
picked up my dies from SSK, they include the load data, and there is more available
easy to make and load the brass, just get some 444 marlins and go!!!
could also pick up some factory horandy/ T/C ammo and reload it....

I have one in an 22 inch bull barrel in my encore, works great. Mainly hunt with a pistol but Canada requires a rifle so the 375 JDJ works great there. It worked very well on Caribou at 160 yards, use the same loads as pistol.

Good Shootin ;D

I had one in a 21 inch bull barrel contender :),it had a real good thump on both ends,AA 2520 was the best powder that I found 270 hornady's would do the job on anything walking,It is a great caliber easy to form only one pass in the dies,it could be loaded a little hotter in the encore. The new 7th edition Hornady manual has load info.

Those of you who have the .375 in a rifle... how far out would you feel comfortable shooting a deer or elk with the .375 in a rifle?  I'm curious as to the useful range of this cartridge ( I have a G2 carbine, and am looking for a good elk round).

With a 14" I feel comfortable to 300 yards (w/ a rest).  Without a rest 75yds.   It is not a performance thing - it is how well you can shoot it.   You have to know your trajectory at practice at all distances.    Sight in at 200, your drop should be close to where the cross hairs get fat at 300.  That's how it worked for me w/ a 14", 250 gr Sierra, AA 2520, and a Tasco 2-8 30mm scope.
As far as you would shoot w/ a 7x57 140gr or a 30-06 180 gr  should be about the same.

Is anybody shooting there 375 jdj t/c rifle? I'm thinking hard about getting one
looks to be a handy rifle. Are you happy with it's accuracy, trajectory? Has anybody shot
over a chronograph? Also who sells dies, is it only ssk?

 Thanks a bunch

A friend just bought one for his Contender.  He is happy w/ Hornady 220 FN bullets.  It will go into 1/2" w/o load developement. No chrono info yet.  Dies are from Hornady or RCBS.  Hornady's are about $10 cheaper.

Thanks Cowboybart
Now that it is a factory barrel, it is quite affordable and maybe just what I need. Time to get out
some trading stock. The ballistics on paper give it a edge over the 45/70 and 444 but I don't have
much to go on. But for a light weight rifle to take backpacking I've just about got myself convinced
