7mm super
« on: April 24, 2003, 06:46:45 AM »
I saw a barrel the other day that had 7mm super on the barrel.  I can't find any information in ny reloading manuals.  What is the story on this caliber?  Thanks.

It is most likely a 7 Supermag - a 357 Max case run into a 7 TCU sizer die - basically a rimmed 7 TCU and uses the same date.  This round is used mostly by silhouetters.

Could also be a 7 Super Bower 307 Win case necked down to 7mm.

Tony D.
is the 7 Super Bower A simple neck-down? or is there some case shortening involved? It would seem to me that simply reducing neck diameter wiuld still have this ctg. beyond Contender limits. But, of course he didn't SPECIFY it was a Contender, did he?,,,,,,,Bug.

The 7 Super Bower is a 307 case necked to 7mm, then fireformed giving it 40ยบ shoulder.  It and the 7mmJDJ#2 are the same cartridge based on case comparison that I did.  708 Ack has around the same case size without the rim.

They are for the Contender.

And i do not doubt your accuracy, nor facts. But isn't the .308 win too high a pressure round for the Contender? Equally the .307? Or, am I just having TIA (Temporary Ischemic Attack- Otherwise known as a brain fart)? The 7mm'08 is for Encores only, as is the .308 win. Why ain't these others? Now you got my curiosity up! Inquiring minds.........Bug.

Good answers guys.   The Bower 7 Super can also be made from 356 Win brass, full length - same as the 307, or cut down 444 Marlin brass.   My Bower/Bullberry 6.5 Super is one of my favorite wildcats on the Contender frame.

Bug, in answer to your questions about the 308 and 307 Winnies being too much for the Contender, you are correct.  Wildcats based on the 307/356 Win case are reloading only propositions.  As long as you stick with established loads, they are safe in the Contender.  Also, because they are wildcats, there are no factory loads available.

I'm sure there are Contender barrels out there chambered in 308 Win used only with handloads well within pressure/backthrust limits of the Contender, but this is a real bad idea.  If the barrel were to be sold and some inexperienced shooter were to use factory loads... not good!

I will add a few more details I found out .  The barrel is 10"  blued bull barrel marked 7mm super.  Box is also marked 7mm super.  This is a factory contender barrel and box.  Thanks for the information already posted.

On 7 Supermag dies, Redding makes two different versions.  I don't remember what the difference is but if you get the Redding dies, be sure and get the TC version.
