Why not just make one receiver?

Hi All

Question:  Why doesn't NEF just make one receiver?  The strong one, and use it on all their rifles and shotguns?  That way it wouldnt matter what you wanted to do with barrel switching?

That is a great suggestion and it has been mentioned before. It is strictly a business decision. One of the the reasons is cost, but I am sure other reasons are taken into consideration, such as numbers of possible sales. I believe it costs the company about $4.00 more to have the SB-2 recievers cast and finished than the SB-1 recievers. Don't ask me where I got that information, I have sworn to keep that a secret....<><....

I understand the finace part but I would be willing to pay $4.00 more for a gun that does it all so to speak

I would think it would cut down on the possibility of someone accidently putting a rifle barrel on a shotgun frame.

If it cost the company $4.00 more to make it...That means it will cost you at least $25.00 more for it...They have to figure in their overhead and all other expenses like marketing  fuel materials electric labor...ect...ect...ect...

Funny part is ...they have the technology to make the receivers 10 times stronger than they are now...but won't implement the process...Same too for having all the barrels fit any receiver... Marlin just doesn't want to spend the money...

Different metals...different heat treating processes = different ratings for each...

SB-1 ratings come from the proof loads of all shotguns they are chambered in.

SB-2's ratings come from the proof loads of center fire rifles they are chambered in.

Both proof loads are the maximum pressure loads that the barrel + action + cartridge can withstand before failing...or for the weapon to function..The SB-2 actions can withstand more than any SB-1 action...this is why you can put shotgun barrels (except 10ga. ) on SB-2 actions..but you not suppose to put rifle barrels on SB-1 frames...Some folks choose to do other wise at their own peril...
