short mag micro hunter
« on: December 07, 2006, 04:17:36 PM »
Hello,

I'm a micro hunter (A-bolt) fan and am considering a new one. Has anyone had experience with one in one of the bigger short mags, e.g., .270, 7mm, or 300. I'm not overly impressed with the short mags. Just thinking of going a notch up from the .308. Should I bother? This will be primarily a deer rifle with maybe an elk every once in a great while. I am mostly curious about recoil with the mags and any feed problems. Thanks and God Bless.

I have a LH Micro Hunter in 22 Hornet.  I wish they would make one in 338 Federal with at least a 22" barrel.  I don't care for the 20".  My hornet is 22" and I love the gun.
Have you considered a 325 WSM?

Hello Greg,

They do chamber the 325. Seems like that would be punishing in a small rifle. Do you think? By the way. All the short mags in the micro line have 22 inch barrels. Thanks.

If I bought any WSM caliber I'd buy a Hunter model with a 23" barrel.

I have a .300 WSM in the tiny Hunter model.  It kicks like heck.  A prefit Limbsaver recoil pad helped alot.  I load it to 30-06 levels for deer hunting.  I see it as the 30-06 of the 2000s, but it actually exceeds the stated '06 ballistics, even with the short barrel.  It groups from 3/4" to 1.5" at 100 yds., depending on what ammo I use.

It's one of my favorite Wisconsin deer rifles.  Shoots good, hits hard & nice to carry, not to mention that it's easy to look at.
Vote them all out, EVERY election!

Does anyone remember the scene from "Quigley Down Under" showing the aborigines lined up on the skyline as far as you could see?   That needs to be US!
