308 NEF bull barrel accuracy
« on: December 08, 2006, 12:10:43 PM »
Hello all, I am new to the group but a long time owner of a 243 bull barrel Ultra rifle. I love the 243 it shoots just about MOA. I bought a 7mm 08 super light a couple of months back but haven't been too pleased with the accuracy so I am going to sell that barrel on e-bay and am considering sending back for a 308 bull for my Ultra. I was wondering if anyone here has that barrel and what kind of accuracy they get with it using factory ammo. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks, Charlie

Welcome aboard, Charlie! What's the length of the 7mm-08 barrel? The reason I ask is because H&R has told us they don't make the 7mm-08 in superlight, it's been listed on the accessory barrel list, but doesn't exist according to them, but is available in a 22" standard contour, one of which I have, but haven't shot it yet, but those here that have them, love em, they're great shooters, that's why I bought mine!! ;)

As for the .308 barrel, there have been several threads recently about accuracy issues, I'd take a look at some of those and see whatcha think, I don't have one, but there have also been a lot of happy .308 Survivor owner reports in the past.

Maybe I should try a couple more loadings then and see if it does any better. What is the muzzle diameter of yours? Please let me know how yours does when you shoot it. Thanks, Charlie

Muzzle diameter doesn't tell much, but all the superlights are 20" long.  See the thread below. ;)

Hey Charlie

Hey all you guys, turns out Charlie is another Handi-Holic from our neck-o'-the-woods ( lik2hunttown and Diggerville  ;D ). Actually he and I attend the same church and have known each other for a looooong time. I just found all this out tonight. So I guess we'll be shooting and hunting together soon. Never even knew he was a hunter, much less a Handi-Holic. Small world ain't it?

Have an ultra in .308- note avatar.

I've tried on reminton's so far, using them for hunting season. I don't hand load either. This was my first group out the box, only using the O-ring to float the forearm.

Geez MSP, don't remind me, the way my back felt this morning when I got up, I felt like I was 10,000, fossilized at least! :(

Thanks,

You'll have to reset your avatar, it was "unset" when the forum was upgraded.

I have a .308 with a bull barrel and it shoots really well, not quite as well as the Stevens 200 but still plenty good for hunting.  I shot two deer with it last year but this year as the 200 and my 1895 45/70 were the ‘new toys’ I used them on alternate days.  The 45/70 saw a nice buck the first day but didn’t get a shot and the 200 drooped two at about eighty yards on the second day.  I probably could have done the same thing with the .308 Handi.  I am more than pleased with it; I just don’t have time to play with all my toys. :'(
