American Pioneer Powder
« on: December 09, 2006, 03:07:10 PM »
Has anyone used this powder in their revolvers before? It says on the can that it is intended to be used on a volume to volume basis with black powder.I have a 36 caliber Navy that I'd like to try it out on.

I took out my 1861 Navy 36 caliber and tried the AP in it. I used no lube. It grouped very well and clean up was easy.  The AP seemed to really compress alot when loaded in a revolver - more so than other powders. I need to try out some of my other revolvers with it, but from my first impression it may be my powder for revolvers from now on.
I have used AP in rifles using lube and it makes a mess, but if you follow their instructions about not using lube it works great.

jgalar,

Thanks for replying to my answer.Other then 50 caliber muzzeloader shooting and hunting, smokeless is the only other way I have fired a revolver or rifle so this black powder revolver stuff is very much new to me.I am as new to this as can be and hope to use the proper components and cleaning supplies.I had stopped by a gun shop and he sold me the APP and .360 balls for my Navy 1851.I should have done more leg work before buying because now I am finding out that maybe the balls are to small.I picked up some lubed patches as well for loading between the powder and ball, but am now wondering if the lube on the patch will contaminate the powder or make a chore out of cleaning the revolver.I had planned on putting a little crisco over the cylinder as well to prevent the other loaded cylinders from premature ignition but it sounds as if lube of any kind is taboo with this APP.

The ball size for your gun should be .375 -.380 not .360.

I went down to Cabelas in W.Va today,it was a nice sunny ride but it killed me not running the beagles on some rabbits in this nice snow.I picked up two boxes of Hornady .375 balls and a few other supplies for the revolver.I even picked up a can of Goex black powder, fffg.Just to give yo an idea as to how long it has been since I bought BP,I had to drive a hundred miles to buy it and was surprised when I had to break out my driver's licence and was escorted out of the store, while an employee carried it out for me.Today would have been a good day to stay home and hunt. You couldn't even walk in Cabelas.I never seen so many people in one place in my life time.It must be getting close to CHRISTmas or something.
