I don't think that they are dying, I think they just didn't catch on. The gun manufactureres expected everyone to abandon their existing guns and go out and buy the WSMs and WSSMs. Most gun owners are sophisicated enough to realize that there isn't just much gain over the tried and proven existing calibers. Those with the new short mags need to build-up a store of brass in order to roll their own because, with low sales much of the commercial ammo may go off the market.
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.

IMHO, high cost of ammunition being that most hunters don't reload, some of the short mags don't outperform the cartridges they were to replace, even though they are suppose to kick less the recoil is still very stout so not much gain here, and finally the bloom is coming off the rose.  Buckfever

The 270 & 300 WSM are doing very well around here...but most of the 25 & 223 aren't...they are still sitting on the dealers shelves...and run in close out ads all the time..

I've got to agree with Mac........270 and .300 WSM are popular around here.........the others don't seem to be doing so well.

At this point, I think the .270 and .300 WSM are going to make it.........

I think they will die off. Like posted before, they offer no advantage over what they were intended to replace. I have never had any interest in them, ballistic they are not better, ammo is twice as expensive. Before I lay down my hard earned bucks, I do research and if I see any advantage, I get it to do the testing myself. Most of the guys I know don't like them either and have no interest in them either.

If memory serves me correctly (it might not) Winchester threw four magnums out in the 50's & 60's.  Some made it- some didn't.  The 300 win mag and 338 win mag are as popular now as ever, the 264, and I think there was another, kind of fell to the wayside.  I expect the same thing will happen to the short mags, a couple will make it a couple won't.

Who, or what, is CDNN?  How do I get a hold of them?

I have one of the 270 WSM's and it is a deadly accurate cartridge in my Winchester. I bought it more for the feel of the rifle though than the cartridge itself. I also bought a large quantity of brass for it just in case they quit producing it. I agree though that the 270 and the 300 will make it though. I do not see the others lasting. I actually load it down to .270 Win. Velocity to go easier on my brass. The WSM and WSSM are like any other cartridges, Either you love them or hate them. Some will say that they
don't offer much over other cartridges, but that can be said of just about any cartridge. There are some cartridges that I absolutely see no use for (7mm-08 - 7-30 Waters) But others love them ! I am just glad that Gun companies are even willing to try something new in this day of ANTI-GUN hysteria! I was looking at the Local Wal-mart and they still have one of the .223 WSSM Winchester Model 70's on the rack. I figured folks would snap them all up because Winchester no longer makes the Model 70.
But there it sits. Unfortunately, I can think of no reasons what so ever to but it myself !

I had a 270 WSM in a Winchester coyote rifle and it was more accurate than any standard 270 that I ever owned.  However, one doesn't need a 1/4 inch rifle when a 3/4 inch rifle will do.

Of the three wsm's , the 270wsm  offers more of an advantage over it's sister round. IMO , the 270 will make it for that reason and the300 will make it just because it's a 30 cal. Ballisticlly the 300wsm and 300wm are identical. I probally would'nt trade one to get the other, but if starting from scratch ,I like them.
