Hi fellows..new to forum and saw this thread...I purchased a 270 spr and absolutely loved it ..the thing really is a tack driver..put leupold(Alum.) rings on it and 3x9 Nikon Buckmaster scope on it. I liked it so well i bought another one in the nickle model. Set it up the exact same way and straight out of the box...it would not fire....my dad is a gunsmith so we cleaned it good and tried again...it would then shoot about 7 out of 10 times...this is a gun for hunting purposes so that definatly wasn't going to work...i did notice also that the mounts had slid on the rail..another bad surprise. Sent the gun back the remington and came back with an "adjusted Barrel" repair. Shoots fine now...When the gun was misfiring the spring loaded (ramp looking)devise inside the receiver when you look straight down in it; appeared to not be coming up far enough to let the hammer completely travel to the firing pin.(This has to be completely up when the breach is closed to fire) It looks like they ground down the length of the triangle shaped piece the protrudes from the very bottom of the barrel that locks the barrel(apparently) to the receiver. This makes sense cause it would then allows the ramp devise to completely come far enough up to aloow the gun to fire.  My first gun also slipped the rings some on the rail so i will be in touch with "Sun Optics" very soon..this seems to be the best solution to the rail problem...Hate to be long winded and not know the proper names of the parts in the gun but I feel like this is the main problem with the misfires...the local distributor has sent several back for the misfires and thats the repair diagnosis the always cures them..I always buy high grade top end guns but liked the looks of the SPR18 and thought i'd try one..with these little minor problems figures out..I still say it is a heck of a little gun even if it sold for 100 bucks more...Killed a 10pt,a 11pt. and doe with the first SPR with some pretty impressive shots....thks guys

Greetings from Nova Scotia.  I have recently purchased one of the Remington SPR18's in 243.  I ordered it from Ellwood Epps in Ontario.  At the time of purchase the clerk on the telephone asked if I wanted a scope mount at the same time. He said this was reccomended for the rifle, of course I did . The cost 29.00 Canadian. This mount appears to attach to the rail very well with three allen head clamp screws and has a picanenny type rail about4 inches long on top. Have not tried the scope attached to it yet or sighted in the rifle. It appears to be a secure mount.

A30-06 caught my eye at the gun show, and I just had to have it.  I think the twisted barrel is really neat. Am looking for a scope base now.  Will reread this thread then will probably need some help.  I'm thinking that this thing would be a great cast bullet shooter, so that is the way I'd like to go.

Dayum, at those prices I wudda bought all 4!  Regardless of caliber.  I've a 308 on order and picked up a mint (albeit used) one in 7.62x39 that's a surprising tack driver with Wolf 154gr soft-points.  I figure a < 2" 5-shot group @ 100-yards to be pretty darn good!  I'll see if it improves when I rework the trigger, glass bed the buttstock, and free-float the forend.  I'll take pictures and will report back ...

Hi Guys,

New to this forum, I'm from New Zealand, home of suppressed forearms.

It seems that the local powers that be have deemed it a good thing to reduce the noise of discharging firearms and thus all the local engineers have become suppressor experts. Normally one would expect a 308 to sound like a 22mag and recoil about the same as a 223.

The local dealer told me he has sold close to 2000 of the things, some for suppressing for farmyard style deer hunting, a lot to the trout fishermen who fish the back country, and some to people like me who just shoot for fun.
I have just bought one in 223.

First off the price $299 NZ which is about $200 USA.

Then seeing as I consider it as a kit gun, do it yourself for the final finnishing, I gently honed the important bits, but found the trigger already hined and a 2 3/4 pull, be it a bit long.

Missfired 1 in 5, but better if snapped shut, now readers please note that the unlocking lever also recocks the hammer, and if the action is not fully locked then it will miss fire as the hammer impinges onto the cocking lug on the locking lever.
Mine was also fitted with a rebounding hammer, that means that it is sprung away from the firing pin after stricking it, this resulted in the primers extruding into the firing pin hole some what, did not look dood at all.

I have fitted a non rebounding feature into my rifle and will soon test it again.

The general finnish on this rifle is good, metalwork good plus, its just the function of them that need completing.

Shooting at a range, rather than over the bonnet of my truck, best was 3 shots 1/2" centres and one shot 1" away, 3 other groups not so good.

Found an easy fix to mount a scope.  The Konus Pro 4x32 a European scope made in P.R.C. (what ever that is) sold here has the 11 mm rings included with it.  I believe I paid about $80 for scope and rings.  It doesn't have a means to use the keyway to prevent movement,so---.    Now we just have to see how well it shoots and holds up.  Will let you all know.

Hi, purchase a Baikal IZH-18 in .308 about three weeks ago.

The first thing i notice when i put it together was that the action was very stiff, now it is workable but i like to see it a bit more smooth (any tips?).
Another thing i have notice is the trigger pull is not a crisp as i like it, where the stock meets the action there is about a 2mill size difference and it has no recoil pad only Bakelite at the end of the stock also the stock is made from birch.

Apart from all that i still like it. It has a 1 to 12 twist on the inside of the barrel and i wonderful twist to it on the outside.
It was a rifle that i was not happy out of the box but i can see what it can be. I have decided that when i get the bits that i have ordered from the states it will be going to the Gunsmith to add a recoil pad, machine some of the dovetail rail so can put on QR mounts and also smooth out the action and trigger.

Does the barrel screw into the breach end with the underlug on it?  Larry

Well, got to try out the Konus rings today on my 30-06.  Was shooting 170 grain gas checked lead at about 2100 fps.  Shot about 35 of them.  No movement on the base.  So, I tryed a factory Remington load with a 220 grain jacketed round nose.  Still no movement, so maybe they will work.  My intent with this rifle is to shoot lead only.  So far at 50 yds, I'm real excited.  I'm getting about 3/4 of an inch groups with the 170's.  Powder is BL-C(2) using the load data out of the Lee manual.  Which by the way is really realistic, and seems to be attainable.  I have the nasty trigger like everybody else.  If I can get that fixed, this thing is probably going to be a great shooter.

I did finally find a base mount that won't move after a few shots.I found it on e bay cost 9.95 but no free lunch I had to retap the cheap screws that came with the mount.I retaped to 8/32 and drilled a extra screw also drilled and taped.
The mount also has a take up screw or set screw top down on the rail.
I still seem to get a misfire  but find if I close the action with a little more pressure it seem to fire all the time 25 out of 25 rounds no misfires.I rework the trigger pull down to 2 lbs seem the rifle is comming to-gether now.
I shot it the other day and it will tack drive the hornady 87 grain SP bulets using IMR3031

I just gunbrokered up a nickled 7.62x39 that should be here before the weekend.

I WILL post that comprehensive range report at 100yds we've all been waiting for since this thread was started almost 4yrs ago.

I have several scope options on hand and a set of high millet angle loc rimfire rings. So I should be able to cobble together something that'll serve for the upcoming accuracy report

here's the particular rifle I have coming

Krochus, looks like you got a nice rifle at a good price.
I got to say that im a tad jealous of you guys in the states... walnut stock and recoil pads, i cant find a recoil pad made for my IHZ18 over here. The importer for Australia cant supply them do you know if anyone sells them as just a part over there and how much?

I was out saturday with the rifle it did tack drive the 105 grains speer but still maybe 25 rounds I will get 1 to 2 misfires or light hits.I went over this gun with a fine tooth comb and I am going to give up on it.
I hope you guys have better luck or tell me how to fix the light hits,I think it the way the hammer springs angles down on the back of the internal hammer I can't seem to hit the nail on the head with this action ???

Reloads or factory ammo?

If handloads have you checked the resized cases in your chamber? It's possibly the shoulder is getting pushed back too far when resizing cases causing your intermittent misfire problem through an excessive headspace condition.

I had a cz527 in 7.62x39 that did this and it took me for ever to figure out my sizing die was the root of my problem.

let me ask you how did you fix the problem with the resizing die?
I full length resize but raise the die about a nickle thickness from the shell holder with the press at the top stroke. The action seem to lock up without any problems tight.
I seem to break firing pins I change the spring for more tension to keep the pin from hitting to hard and denting the primer on the case,I had one hit that the primer would not return and crack the stem of the pin off when trying to open the action.I have one new firing pin left

in my case when full length resized I discovered my brass would fall into my new case gauge almost .015" below flush

In this case you most definitely are not full length resizing.  I wonder if even though it seems as though your action is locking up in fact it's remaining unlocked enough to prevent the firing pin from going full travel. When you resize a case how far will it go into the chamber with the extractor either pulled back or removed?

It almost sounds as though you're piercing primers

I like to post the mount I used on the SPR 18 works great but did need improvement
the cheap metric screws were re-taped to 8/32 and I need to to add another screw drilled and taped for the base mount. The 11MM rail was to short to have the 3 stock screws to catch the rail.
I yet had it to move solid as a rock price was 9.95 off of e bay

If you looking for a permanent mount i think these (http://www.sportsmatch-uk.com/eto9c.htm) look like there up for the task and would help with the short mounting space.
(note: i have not used them so my option is not grounded by fact)

i've been reading this thread with great interest.

my own story is a baikal i got last year in 7.62x39mm - perfect cartridge for this kind of gun IMO. like others, i have had some misfires, always with wolf or the very similar "barnhaul" ammunition. both of these ammo's are steel cased, and i feel that they must use harder primers aimed at SKS and AK47 owners. it may also be a headspace issue, but i am yet to confirm that.

the gun has been good to me in the bush, and i initially  mounted a 2-7 bushnell in high sportsmatch mounts, which worked ok. but it spoilt the guns ballance, and i eventually took the scope off and now happily use the iron sights. i feel that there's no need for a  scope on this sort of gun for my uses (ie: pigs and goats in thick scrub) since most shots are well under 60 yards. for a gun that cost me $320AUD i'm very happy with it.

here's her first blood:

RANGE REPORT

7.62x39 spr18

3 to 4 inch 100yd 5 shot groups using Barnual
3 to 4 inch 100yd groups using handloads

Crooked chamber at the neck shoulder junction very obvious on the fired cases.

As you can imagine I'm pretty disappointed right now I'm contemplating either unloading the thing, sending it back toe Remington or reaming it to 303brit

Ream it to .303 and let me know how it does.  I've been debating getting one and doing it, but business is slow right now and I've spent too much money on other toys right now.   ;D

I already restamped the BBL and have a 303 reamer en route.

Should be a super simple job on this rifle, I'm just gonna ream the extractor with the chamber all at once since it's a large free floating flush mount affair and this will be a hand ream.

krochus : update on the 243 cal. light hits
I think the problem is solved I shot 40 rounds to day not one mis-fire or light primer hit.
The full length resizing did it thank you
I also did find it likes IMR 3031 with the sierra 85 grain HPBT
I also find it like the speer 105 with IMR 4350
100 grain bullets are so,so.

I like a man of action!  I'm getting excited about it, and I'm not even the one doing it.  Man, I'd love to hear that it goes great, I really want to do one up in .303.
