For some reason I have agreed to buy one of this russian beauties; chamber in 308win, unfired, stock given a workover with oil and a Pachmayer fitted. Cheap as chips. I have ordered a mount from Sun Optics (exellent company, ships within hours of confirmed payment) and a Burris Fullfield-II 2-7x35.
Plan is to cut the barrell back a little and thread it for a supressor (no restrictions on supressors in Norway); it will make a nice little rifle for hunting roedeer near houses and inearly mornings/late evenings.

Cutting of the barrel leaves me with a rearsigth I kind of do not need; how is this fixed to the barrel? Same ugly welded pins as forward?

Sorry-no pics yet; but will post when me and the gun has met up:-)

cheifen,     I too removed the sights from my SPR 18 rifle.  As you found in removing the front site there is a welded on threaded mounting pin.  The rear sight only has 1 as compared to 2 for the front sight.
I just cut them off with a small grinding / cutting wheel and filed them flush to the barrel.
My rifle is also a 308 Win and has a 3 X 9 Burris Fullfeild on it, its quite accurate and has taken some antelope at long ranges.  I'm very happy with mine.   :)   Jed

Has anyone mounted a red dot to these guns? I bet i would be easy to tap the top for a single weaver mount and mount up an aimpoint micro.

I've been considering getting one in 308win...

That is a good looking scope on your rifle. I just picked up a SPR-18 in 7.62x39 2 weeks ago used (but not used much) Shot it last week--before the scope moved it shot a ragged hole at 50 yds. With norinco military ammo. Now, after I read all of the post in this thread I'll be looking at 11mm scope mounts to put on it.

Does the front sight come off without having to cut it off? I don't have it handy and have been thinking about removing it as it came with no rear sight on it.

Someone epoxied a rail on it where the rear sight should be and I figure that I will probably have to cut it off some how. I don't know of anything that removes epoxy by chemical action. I no longer do well with open sights on a rifle--its either a scope or I use a shotgun.

If my new rifle turns out to be a shooter, i think i might add a red dot. I'd prefer an aimpoint micro, but i'm not putting an optic on this rifle that costs more than it did. So i'll probabl get a vortex sparq or a primary arms micro. I'm thinking about mounting it on one of these...

Just one mounted with a bolt through the cross cut on the 11mm rail..

Cybin,

If the rail is really epoxied to the barrel, then don't try to saw it off.  Almost all epoxies (including the wonderful JB Weld) are simply resins and hardeners that will soften to a paste and come off easily if they are heated to about 250 degrees.

I have been told that applying this heat, and wiping off the epoxies, does not damage the bluing at all.

Please go to Board called Gunsmithing, and go back through the post subjects until you find a couple on JB Weld or other epoxies.  Read up on them and go forth.

Hope this helps.

Well i picked up my 308win baikal, got to shoot it aswell. HOLY CRAP!!!!! This thing hits harder than Mike Tyson. Today it feels like someone punched me in the face 12 times.....and i shot 4rds. My shoulder feels fine, and i didnt notice any recoil in my shoulder, its my face that took the brunt of the force...

Mannyrock--I heated up the rail with a propane torch a little and then gently hit it using a block of wood and a hammer--the rail poped off very easy. Unfortunately who ever put it on the barrel sanded the blueing off under where they wanted it. So I will be using some cold blue on the bare spot--but few will ever see it as most of it is covered by a scope. Thanks again for the help.

Fantastic Cybin.  I'm glad I could pass on some useful information, and your report was an education for me as well.
