Hi everyone I am new here and interested in handgun hunting. I was wondering what the recoil is like on one of these monsters? I had a BFR in 475 Linebaugh with a 7 1/2 inch barrel that wasent that bad but it was before they were drilling and tapping for scope and couldnt get any local smithes to do it they all said the stainles is to brital for some reson so I sold it. Now I am looking at the 460 smith and the 629 perfomince center light hunter in 44 mag. There is just somthing about big bore revolvers that I just love.

In the S&W X frame the 460 Mag is actually very pleasant to shoot. I have shot 44 Mag's that have had more felt recoil. I am shooting my 5 inch 460 Mag without any comp. I bought one of the end cap which is not a comp. The 300 gr. cast bullets I shoot out of it is not bad at all. My 7.5 inch PC model is a lot less felt recoil than the 5 inch. But in my opinion the 460 Mag is actually a blast to shoot.

That is the only thing that was stopping me from getting one. I don't know anyone that ownes a 460 so I could not try one my self. BUT KNOW i THINK i WILL END UP BUYING ONE. I hope to draw a moose tag and want to use a hand gun to take it. I think the 460 would be just the ticket. Thank you

I think the 460 Mag is a great over all round, the 45 L/C feels like your shooting a light 38 special round and the 454 Casull round don't have much in the recoil department either in the X frame.

Accuracy in both of my 460 Mags is outstanding. I have had five 460 Mags, I got them set up and my buddies bought them from me. They love them as much as I do mine. I have not found one 460 Mag that did not give me great groups and excellent accuracy.

If you got one, please let us know how you make out with it.

how are the are the encores for recoil? The smith with a 2x leupold and rings is about $1550 out the door and that is a little pricey and at about 5.5 pounds set up. maybe have a 15" encore cut to 13" and a 2" brake put on it. What is your thoughts?

It is not a problem, I had a 454 Casull Encore barrel that I had re-chambered to 460 Mag and had a break installed, it was not bad at all in the recoil department.

I have a 14" (total with OTT fish gill brake) OTT encore 460 barrel. Recoil with the factory 200 grainer is mild, and with the 240 XTP-MAG, it is just a little heavier.I feel OTT's brake is really effective. Have not had a chance to try the 275 XPB yet, or some 300 GC FA mold, or my 340GC. So far, I've been told that in a closed breach single shot, you can usually add 25% of the velocity of the revolver data. I have small hands, so the encore trigger reach is just a tad far, but I'm going to modify the grip some and see if I can get a better reach. First time out, the 200 factory ammo went under 1" 3 shot groups @ 100 yards, and a couple of the 240 XTP-MAG loads went 1". I know it can do better, because it was freezing out there, and I was using only a 2x B&L scope.

I have a 15 " factory SS Encore, with a 2-6 Trophy on it. Sorry to say, it is brutal to shoot ! I do like it, but its a handful. I've considered having a few inches cut off and having a brake installed.....maybe when the bills are caught up. I have a friend who shoots a .50 Alasken, not sure of length, around 12 - 14 inches I think. My 460 has a harder punch , by far ! Good luck

irold, with a single shot closed breach, you will have more recoil than a revolver. My S&W 460 Mags are not bad without a muzzle brake.

Thanks Redhawk....he loves shootin' it as much as me. It was such a pleasant surprise to find that a hand cannon of this size was so much fun to shoot........I gotta get into reloading before he and his big brother shoot me into the poor house. We used to be able to spend the whole day shootin' our different guns and still get by cheaply enough with factory loads, but the .460 is quite unlike that. Altho .45's and 454's are fun out of it also and considerably cheaper, they don't give the adrenaline rush of the full load .460's.

Redhawk , Thats understood , as far as the closed breech . Who or where would be a good place to do a cut and brake job ? I have to keep in mind I'm dealing with a factory barrel, Don't want to put more $ in a cut job than the barrel is worth. Thanks for the feedback. Mike

Not sure where your from, Redhawk, but in my parts , there's not a "good" gunsmith around. At least, not that I trust . Maybe I'll check with the Fox Ridge boys. Seems like I get good service from their department, lest so far. Thanks for the feed, Redhawk.

Redhawk, your very lucky. We have a few "young " gunsmiths here, been out of school only a few months, they try but just don't have any experience, I realize everyone has to start somewhere.....but I'd just as soon not have them practice on my firearms. Again thanks for the feedback,

I have shot a long barrelled 460, thought it was mild to some of the 44 mag stuff I have shot, not that bad. I have a 4" 500 S&W and will use "light" (~44 mag level) loads in it while keeping the few factory rounds I have for those times when that bear thinks I should be lunch (hopefully event that count = 0!) as it is unpleasant to shoot.

But if you can really handle a heavy 44 load in a typical pistol, you should be able to handle the 460. The 460 is probably a much better than many of the other large calibers on the market.
