My son gets his first deer with the 223 Superlight/youth
« on: December 11, 2006, 03:55:35 AM »
Sat afternoon my son got his first deer! he's 9 and I have him setup with a NEF superlight 223 with the stock shortened, with a Sightron s2 2.5-7 "shotgun" scope

nailed his first deer (spike) about 90 yards out, text book perfect shot behind the shoulder, deer jumped straight up and went off through the brush.. waited about 45 mins (hard for him to deal with!)  my son found the blood trail and there it was about 50 yards out dead to rights.  64g Federal tactical sp went through both rib cages with a good 1" plus hole and through the opposite shoulder
too bad the deer didn't read where a 223 wasn't "enough gun"

I asked him what he thought the instant he pulled the trigger, his response "suasage!"
the other funny thing was when I showed him the entrance wound he said "but I aimed here" and pointed to a spot a 1/2" in front of the hole.  ah.. thought I was going to weep

We had a GREAT time
It's such a great thing to be out there with your son, passing on the tradition.

I also got my first deer with my new .41 mag Smith, got it Friday and it did a stellar job, write up in the handgun hunting forum

Congratulations to you and your son on the first of many to come. After seeing what my daughter in law's .223 Handi did to her heart shot buck this Oct, I beleave that a well placed .223 is enough gun. That buck took two steps and went down. The sound of that shot brought out another buck and my son shot it with his .30-06, and when that buck disapered, we thought that he had piled up with the other buck. We found out differently when we got over to where they were. The first buck was down, but the second buck managed to go another 100 + yds down thru some of the worst brush and briars around. had a heck of a time finding him. Told my son after ward, that maybe he should have used the Handi, as it looks like those .223 drop these little black-tail buck like a bad habit.

Congrats to you and your son. I plan on doing something very similar with my son, in a few years (he is almost 4). I can't wait!

ccocker'

congrat's on setting up your young man for success and a lifetime of good hunting.   my compliments.

elkslayer'

put a 60 gr' Hornady spire point in front of a proper powder in the .223 (like Win-748; BL-C(2), etc....)
and the deer will go down quickly when Properly hit in the brisket, lungs, neck, heart, etc.....(diaphragm...).

i've seen it done by nuisance permit.............and it's a very effective bullet out to approx' 200 yds' on deer even weighing over 200 lbs.

take care,

ss'

Congratulations to both of you ccoker. Value this time with your son, it will reward you and make him a man you will proud of, as you are already, and with good reason....<><.... :)
