What are your thoughts on the Ruger Super Blackhawk?
« on: December 11, 2006, 07:45:56 AM »
I've got one of these and I've been struggling to get consistantly good groups.  Some days I'm excellent with this 44 and other days I'm just aweful.  I have pretty large hands and I struggle to get a good grip on the gun.  I just ordered a hogue rubber grip and I'm hoping that helps me get more consistant with this gun.  Mine is the 7 1/2" blued model.  I normally handload 180gr over 30 gr of H110.

Anybody have any hunting experience with a revolver like this?  Anybody have any great handloads that get them great accuracy?

I put a pachmeyer grip on mine, load 21.3 gr's of 2400 over 240 grain bullet shoots well for me.

I have a Super Blackhawk Hunter model. I've never got good gpoups with the 180gr bullets. The Two loads I use for 99% of my shooting in this gun are as follows. 250gr cast 429421 over 9.0 grains of unique, these average 1100 fps and are accurate @ 1 1/4" @ 25 yds for 12 shots, twice around the cyl.. My hunting load consists of a 429244GC over 21.5 grs. of 2400. This is a very hot load with the newer lots of 2400 so start at 19.5 or 20 grs and work up.5 grs at a time. My cases fall out and don't show any signs of high pressure, but that's just my gun. With the lube and the gas check this bullet weighs 265 grs in my alloy. With the above load it averages 1408 fps and shoots 1 1/8 for 12 rnds. 240 gr Hornady XTP's over 23.5 grs of Win.296 shoot 1 1/4" but I no longer use any jacketed bullets in either of my .44 mags. If I had to buy cast bullets I'd get the 260gr WFN avaible from several comm. casters.
Hope this helps.

If you are getting good groups one day, and not the next it sounds like shooter inconsistencies to me. I'll bet a bigger grip will help you a lot with large hands. I shoot a hot load almost identical to yours in a couple of mine with great accuracy.   KN

I'm looking forward to the bigger grips.  I know the problem is that I just can't get a good consistant grip on the gun.  Once I get that taken care of I know the gun will shoot just fine for me.

Before mine even left the gunshop, it had a new Pachmayr grip installed!

Good investment!  Helps to maintain control and accuracy when shooting!  Minimizes muzzle jump and it doesn't slip in your hand!

I've had good accuracy results with 180 Sierra JHP with 27.5 grains of WW-296 (or H-110), or Hornady 240 grain XTP's with 24.0 grains of WW-296. Both loads have grouped very well in two different 7-1/2" Ruger SBH's.

I agree. I am going to bet it's shooting technique.

I put the hogue rubber grips on it last night.  I can finally get my whole hand on the thing.  The grip feels good and I'm looking forward to trying it out at the range.  I just have to load up some ammo first.

I put hogue grips on my Blackhawk 45 colt with a 7.5" barrel. I took it to the range and sighted it in. I was using 240 gr. XTPs being pushed by 23.5 gr of Lil Gun. I also had an older guy show me how I should be holding it so I don't tear up my knuckles by the trigger spur. I'm shooting sub 1" groups at 25 yds with no scope! ;D

I have a 5 1/2" with the Hogue grips on and I love the fact that I feel I can get a good grip with one hand on it.  I had a Vaquero before in 44, and when I got this one, it had a Hogue grip on it before I even went and shot it.
Just back form Iraq, glad to be back in Colorado!!!!
