Favorite Rimfire ammo
« on: December 11, 2006, 12:51:56 PM »
What is your favorite rimfire ammo to use for squirrel/rabbits? Im gonna try so good ammo in my revolver to see what it likes. Ive been using bulk Federal ammo which is okay. I use my Rimfire tool on it to make a larger hallow point and it has okay accuracy but better than the Remington. Ive used CCI Minimags in the past and will probly try them again. The closest place to get ammo to me is Walmart and they dont have the widest selection. What are some other good brands of hunting ammo you know of?

Why do you need any more than what you're shooting?

Ive used bulk Federal HPs for years with no prob. Even though they dont have the same size hp opening as the Remingtons, they expand just fine in rabbits and squirrels.

I stopped using bulk Remingtions only because I got an unacceptable number of misfires during 1000 rounds shot over 2 days, but that may have been a bad lot and Im sure those would have worked in squirrels and rabbits just as well.

If youre willing to take the time to go to the range with a bunch of targets and types of ammo, shoot a few groups with each, and measure them to see what is smallest, then do that.

Otherwise, use what works. This is one area of life that you dont need to make overly complicated.

I'm with skycrab99  on this one. If the Federals are shooting good enough for squirrel hunting, I'd stick with them.

I've been shooting the Federal 36g HP 550 round bulk packs from Wal-Mart for several years now. Honestly, without spending $8-$10 a box of 50 for the match ammo, the Federals shoot as good as any in nearly every gun(dozens, and dozens) I've tried them in. They're also excellent performers on small game.

Ill always have bulk federal on hand because I agree with the reasons above. I tried the Minimags and 22 Mag Maximags out of my single6. The Magnums threw larger groups than the Minimags. When I reformed the Minimags I got 3/4" groups at 25 yards.

For shooting squirrels and rabbits I use either Winchester or Federal, which ever was on sale last.  Actually I often find myself scrounging through boxes and drawers for any thing that might be there and hoping it has not been laying around for so long that it doesn’t shoot anymore. :D

For small game I prefer Rem. Sub Sonics. They are very accurate in most of my 22 rifles & handguns. Low noise & good clean kills.

Winchester Bulk Dyna-points. I will try to post a pic of a 50 yard group I recently fired with them
and an old Clip fed Marlin model 20. I was impressed enough that I cut it out and kept it ;)

I like CCI Minimags too.  My 10/22 is kinda finicky and won't feed the cheap suff.

Seems like i have the best luck with Federal ammo. Have tried Rem. on many occasions due to the price but go back to the federal for the accuracy i want. once in a while i will use cci mini mags..........Joe.......

I second the Remington subsonics. Very accurate in my 10" Contender, better than Federal HiPowers in that firearm. A real squirrel killer and haven't had a misfire yet.

remington hyper velocity hollow points for me.  use them on rabbits in my .22 with great success.  never had a misfire, used to use winchesters but had a lot of misfires so wont use winchester shells in any of my guns any more, have even had winchester misfire in a 30-30, missed a chance at my first deer becuase of one, no more winchesters for life ;)

Federal in the blue box, wolf MT, and I'm going to try Aquila subsonics as a substitute for shorts.

I like subsonics for small game, especially under 50 yards. I use Aguila & PMC moderators at times, but my usual .22 RF rounds are CCIs, in any configuration.
The CCIs have been the most consistant and generally most accurate rounds in my experience..
CCI standards are an excellent choice for squirrel also..very accurate in all my .22s..

For me, both Federal bulk and the Remington Golden bullet bulk from walmart work equally in my single six.

It used to be the cheap stuff, but after having my groups open up to unacceptable size Ive switched to Federal Gold Medal Match. That gets me back down to 1/2 inch groups at 50 yards with my rifles. Making longer shots MUCH easier.

I also use the Federal Gold Medal match ammo. I agree with nilescoyote. My 22 sporter also gives half inch groups at 50 yards with this ammo. It is a 40 grain solid bullet, but I don't need a hollow point if I can place it this precisely. And my rifle/scope combo gives me essentially the same point of aim at 25 and 50.

The cheap remington has given me to many misfires in the last couple of years and the groups are far too big for head shots on the squirrels.

My cz453 shoots federal champions great.  Last time I was at the range i shoot two 25 shot groups that could each be covered with a quarter.  I was shooting wolf match ammo prior to the champions.  The wolf shoot better but the federal only cost me $1.69 a box last time I bought some.

Those Federals certainly were a God send for the budget of a grade schooler, I can remember them as being accurate but quite dirty. So dirty in fact, that my old Marlin Glenfield would require the barrel to be pulled to clean up the action and especially the feed ramp every couple hundred rounds to keep it working.
By the time my mid highschool years rolled around I was shooting the CCI mini-mags and never looked back, about 35yrs now all in all.

I used to use CCI Mini-Mags exclusively, then money got tight.  I practiced with Remington bulk and hunted with CCI - until I discovered that two different lots of CCI wasn't igniting all the way in cold weather, and the lack of pressure allowed powder to blow back in my face.  It seems that a while back CCI changed their priming compound to be cleaner, but it's not as hot, or I'm given to understand this to be true anyway.

The Remington kept chugging.  Sure, there was a misfire once in a while, but it works.  As well, Remington seems to use the same lube on their subsonics, so when I use them, I don't have to clean and re-season the barrel for subsonic ammo.

With Remington SS, all shots stay within one hole about half the diameter of a dime at 50 yards.  The Golden Bullets stay under a nickel most times.

Regardless, they're both accurate enough from my 'scoped Romanian M69 trainer.

Favorite for the 17HM2's is the Hornady V-Max, and for the 17HMR's is CCI TNT's.    Which depends on range and whether for meat or ADC.   Don't use my 22 RF firearms much anymore.

Federal 510 Champion 40 grain is my favorite.   It is very accurate.   Just yesterday I took a large fox squirrel, shot it through the heart.  In one side and out the other.    He moved around the tree limb, and I thought I'd missed.   After a short pause, he bailed out and hit the ground stone dead.   A perfect shot, However, I think the hollowpoint would produce more shock in small game.

I shoot the bulk Remington gold hollow points in most of my guns.  Better accuracy than the Federals in almost every gun I've tried, and I think I've had one misfire in the last ten years.  However, out of my CZ 452, the Winchester Power Points get the nod.  They will shoot 5 shots inside a dime at 50 yards (if I do my part), and that big hollowpoint is explosive on squirrels (which means head shots only).  The Power Points are sometimes hard to find though.
