ruger Mk II synthetic 30.06
« on: December 11, 2006, 03:41:02 PM »
I have a M70 in 06 but hate to take it out when wet or in thick brush.  So far it is not scared.  I just put a hoold on a a Ruger MKII in 30.06 that is stainless with a synthetic stock.  They are on close out for $499.  Plus I have a coupon for another $25 off, I can use my Gander Mtn credit card and get a $25 in rewrd certificate so the price is $450.  Would you go for it.  To me it is a no brainer.  I understand the accuracy of these guns is pretty good and I reload to make it better.  I am considering a Leupold 3x9 or 2x7 that I can get at Cabelas now with another deal they have on.

The Novi, MI store has a special on that certain models are  $499.  I have their credit card so I got a coupon in the mail that was good for 5% off  firearms plus you get 5% towards certificates for their card in the store.  Plus using any Master Card for more than $250 got you a on the spot $25 gift card. Plus 6 months no interest.

I have heard horror stories also, however, the good stories way out rank the bad.  I think some of the bad could be attributed to several facotors not related to the gun such as:

Sighting in the gun using a rolled ujp coat, gun case or othe improper object.
Not supporting the butt when sighting in
putting barrel on the rolled up coat, gun case of other improper material
loose scopes
not trying enought ammo
they just cant shoot and go out to sight in their gun and maybe blow of 10 rounds before the season and that is about it.

One thing also that seems to help, on any gun, is to break in the barrel. Take the time to break in a barrel. I think alot of new guns foul heavily when new and the barrel gets fouled up and accuracy suffers. The owner of the gun then thinks the rifle doesn't shoot. The other nice thing about breaking a barrel in is they don't foul much and clean up is so much easier.

I called Gander Mountain to check on the price of the stainless and was told 539. The blue is 499. I told them that I had heard the MI stores were selling them at 499. They couldn't find anything on it. I was thinking about buying one, but if they can't do any better on the price than that I'll just wait for the hawkeye. To bad no one is selling them for 444 around here - OH.

A Savage is probably my nest purchase.  What model and caliber do you have?  I am thinking of a predator/walking varmint gun in 223, 243 or maybe 25.06.  Maybe a 17 HMR first. I heard their accuracy is awesome.

i hope you won't put down a single penny on a Savage.   you can order a decent rifle by Remington or Ruger, or Weatherby or Howa from Wal Mart and get a better barrel.......with better out-of-the-box accuracy in the Remington, Howa, and Weatherby......and possibly with a Ruger.    (Savages oftentimes have rough barrels from what i've seen on www.long-range.com and its sister site www.nationalmatch.us)   the Savage synthetic stocks are even lighter-weight than Remington's!

i'd look at wal mart's website typing in rifles for my search under sporting goods.    that's how i'm going to probably buy my next rifle if not from Galipolis gun and archery down along the ohio river. (he comes to the shows in n.e. Ohio to sell firearms).

take care,

Thanks for the information about Walmart.  I was condsidering a Howa.  I looked at their website and the MSRP prices were good  and the limited information I have seen on them looks good.  Is there a website that would discuss them more?

Howa manufactures the Weatherby Vanguard.   that should tell you how decently they work-up a rifle!   the difference is that Weatherby is now pulling some of their better shooters out of the regular Vanguard line and charging more for them as Vanguard Sub-MOA's.    Howa sells 22" barrels and different stocks so i'm guessing that they aren't culling the best Howa's and charging more for them.   ( the average accuracy of a standard Vanguard is probably going down if they pull them for their Sub-MOA line.................because it's simple arithmetic really!)

the blued Howa Lightning is sold by Wal Mart for $366.....with the stainless Lightning going for $454 the last i looked..........with synthetic stocks in "standard" calibers.    those are good prices, mike.

now you've got me all wound up and thinking even more about buying one.   :o :o ( i picked up a Vanguard from Wal Mart just a couple years ago for $250 when they were being cleared out and before Weatherby started that Sub-MOA lineup.   my .270 Vanguard is a Shoooooter!)

take care,

At that price they are not much more than the 17 HMR I was thinking of getting.  I bet one of those would make a good walk around varmint-predator rifle.  There is a large outdoor store in central Michigan called Jays that carries quite a few Howas.  Next time I go thru there to visit my parents I have to spend some time.

the only thing i don't know about the Howa right now is how heavy does it feel as a 'carry' rifle.   my Vanguard is heavy in the long-action .270 caliber with the American-made synthetic stock on it.   the shorter 22" barrel and the different stock might make a difference with the Howa?   maybe a little of your input in that area would help me....

let us know how you do with that Ruger, by the way.    on www.centerfirecentral.com they had a gunsmithing section with directions to use a stone to slightly modify the trigger so that its sear engagement/trigger pullweight was lightened.   i did three or four of them with Very Good results.

but, the angles must be kept proper, as you might already know, to get a proper engagement at the sear.

good shopping and good shooting to you,

ss'
