220 Swift Reloading
« on: December 11, 2006, 04:14:22 PM »
Recently purchased a Ruger M77 ni 220 Swift caliber  ;D. I plan on relodaing for this rifle. Wanted to know what would be a good starting grain for the bullet in this caliber (.224) 55 grain etc, I have read that on some bullets there is a required twist for the rifling. Also was looking at the Swift 75 grain scirocco bullets do these require a certain amount of twist in the rifling in order to shoot properly ???

It all depends on your twist.  The faster your twist, the heavier bullet you can shoot.  I would guess that you have either a 1 in 12 or 1 in 14 twist, which would mean that you probably can't shoot the 75's.  The heaviest that I can shoot in my .22-250 is about 60 grains, and that is touch and go.  I have a 1 in 12 twist and I usually load pretty ot.  I would just stick with 55's or 50's.  You you plan on shooting deer, use the 55 grain bullets with good, strong construction.  Winchester softpoints are extremely cheap ($9 for 100), and they shoot good and hold together well.  If you wanted to shoot a heavier bullet you would need to get down to a 1 in 10 or faster.

My old Ruger 77 Tang Safety  220 Swift likes The old Nosler Solid base 50 Gr bullet w/.030 freebore COL 2.727 in, 37.5 Gr IMR 4064 powder ,CCI BR-2 primers, in WW Super cases. 1/2 inch groups at 100 Yds. MV 3,840 ft/sec.  I tried .015,.020,.250,and .030 freebore  and found that .030 was the most accurate.  I also tried H 4895,H414,IMR4831, Varget, and IMR 4064 with 55 and 50 Gr bullets , but the 50 Gr bullet with IMR 4064 is the best in my rifle. Every rifle is different but using IMR 4064 with 50 Gr bullets is a good way to start if your rifle has a 1-14 inch rifleing twist.

:) thank you guys I appreciate this very much. Just needed a starting point, I have one relodaing manual, I know to use them and everything. Now just waiting on Christmas  ::) to see if I get the componets I've requested, plus maybe, just maybe if my son comes through with another press.  ;D

i have toyed  a lot with a ruger #1 in 220S. My favorite powder to load is H380 even though I've had good luck with the imr 4350 and 4064, Consistent 3/8 in group with the 380. bullet choices have been the 55 gr rem sp, 60 gr hornady sp, 55 gr nosler BT, best all time group was with H380 and Sierra 55gr SBT in Game King (1 hole). I've tried the 69 gr sierra Game King with no luck at all. The H380 meters in my powder drop much better than the stick powders. I don't know the twist.  Primer choice didn't seem to make a difference.

I just purchased a used Ruger 77 with tang safety bull semi barrel and took it out with a new reload using IMR 4895 and a 52 gr JHP.  I shot several ground squirrels and found that on center mass shots.  All I would find was the head and tail.  Sometimes the rear legs were attached to the tail, sometimes not.  Most impressive.  I loaded the empties up with the same powder charge and 40 gr VMax bullets to see what they do next trip out.
