They cut ports in the barrel to reduce recoil or muzzle flip. Magnaporting in a trade name and there are other processes that do the same thing. Some factory guns are magnaported or you can send them after purchace.

The porting system that Dan Wesson used, was unique to them. With the barrel and shroud being 2 seperate piece's, the holes drilled in the barrel vented off some of the gas's, and with the shroud having a port on each side of the rib, and the barrel nut sealing off the front, the gas's would exit thru the top. I had a .44 with this system, but it didn't work very well. I had more problems with the holes in the barrel clogging up, and not working at all. This was especially bad when I shot cast bullets, so it basically got put on the back shelf. The new system they use, with the barrel being about 1.5'' shorter than the shroud, and the shroud having 3 slots cut in the top, is suppose to be much better. I myself, have not shot one of the newer ported barrels, but have talked with several shooters with .445SM, and they say it does make a big diference.  gypsyman

Pa-Joe and Gypsyman are abosolutely correct.  MagnaPort is the trade name used by Larry Kelly.  His porting system is excellent and works well.  Dan Wesson's old system was called Power Port.  It caused a lot of problems and was discontinued decades ago.  Dan Wesson now has an excellent recoil compensator that probably works better than Magnaporting.  Dan Wesson's current system can be seen on the Alaskan Guide Gun on the CZ-DW web site.  Here is an extended discussion we had a little while back on the same issue.  As a matter of fact, I think I will "sticky note" that thread at the top of the list so that it can be found easily:
