understanding scope specs

I need some help understanding the numbers associated with scope powers.. I know that this is a simple question but i have been hunting for 25 years and still dont completely understand what the numbers on the scope signify...for example..i have 2 simmons 44 mag scopes etc...3-9x50 , 3-9x44 etc....what do these numbers surely mena...also , what exactly are the top end scopes in power versus bottom end...thanks

3-9x50 That mean the magnification is 3 times thru 9 times. w/ a 50 mm objective lens

3-9x44 same as above but w/ a 44 mm objective lens
