Scope mounting
« on: December 12, 2006, 06:16:38 AM »
I have a Handi in 30-30 and am about to get one in 22 Hornet.  I want to put a scope on the Hornet but I don't like the high rings.  What can I do to keep the scope lower and still clear the hammer??

Welcome to GBO! One thing is to get a scope that has a separate, smaller power ring so the hammer has a little clearance between the power ring and ocular bell for swing room. Scopes that have a large power ring or is part of the ocular bell will most likely need high rings unless you can mount the scope back far enough so the hammer swings in front of the power ring.  Most of mine that can be mounted that way are in medium rings. The other alternative is to modify that hammer, there are 2 options shown in the FAQs and Help.

What about mounting a shotgun scope or something with longer eye relief and keeping it ahead of the hammer??   Has anyone out there done this??  Any other ideas??     Thanks for any input.

One of mine I used Med Leupold rings with 3X9 - 40. Groud end of hammer
down to the hammer extension. got about 3 or 4 thousands clearance.
wotks fine. I put 4X Simmons shotgun scope could not move scope for enough
to get clearance. Just thimgs I have done. that works. Marv.

quickdtoo,

Would you mind telling me what brand scope and model is mounted on you .500S&W?  I am trying to find an alternative to the high rings also.  Also, what height rings are you using on that rifle?

Thanks

It's a Bushnell 2½x20 Shotgun scope, I don't think it's available any more, it's mounted in medium Burris Signature Zee rings. Simmons made one similar to it that several folks here have used mounted the same way, if you can find one of em as I don't think they make em any more either.

spanky, I have found the Weaver Quad-Lock 4x4 medium rings work very well with alot of my applications, and I think they look nice too.  As a bonus, they're on sale right now.

You'll find Midsouth, a GBO sponsor, will kick Midway's butt in both price and shipping on most product comparisons, the Quadlocks are only $9.99 at Midsouth at their regular price!

I'll second that. I have done it to 2 of my Handis and it works great. I like the look of it too.

I used low Miillett Angle-Loc rings to mount a 3-9x40 Tasco World Class on my H & R Ultra in 25-06. Had to set the scope so that the ocular bell cleared the hammer, clears by approx 1/8 inch

Used med Leupold QRWs to mount Burris 4X compact on my huntsman. I use the hammer extension, and there is more than 1/8" clearance above the unaltered hammer. This scope has 5" of eye relief, which helps for unexpected positions/angles, but the ocular is still above the hammer. Cheek weld and eye position with these rings is absolutely perfect for me(standard synthetic stock). Do the test - close eyes, mount gun to shoulder and cheek, then open eyes. You shouldn't have to adjust to much for a clear picture. Mediums are the way to go unless you have a large objective. Put too big a scope on and the gun loses alot of its appeal - light weight and balance- unless of course you don't have to carry it alot.
