Author Topic: How About The Rem Ultra-Mags (Read 3567 times)

Is there any advantage going to the Rem Ultra Mags over the Winchester Mags (not short mags) taking into consideration price and cartridge availability. Will the Ultra Mags die off like I think some of the Short Mags will?

No way the Ultra Mags will die out. At least not the smaller bores. I have a 300RUM and absolutely love it. The ballistics are unreal compared to its little brother (300WM). And really doesn't kick as bad as you may think. I have it in a Rem 700 and it kicks straight back w/ very little muzzle jump. Now I don't know how popular the bigger bores are like the 375RUM. That one must give a whallup.
I have borrowed my RUM to go on quite a few trips, and one of the guys owns a 300WM.

I shot my bear with my 300 RUM shooting 200 partitions. My 300 WIN wouldn't shoot them fast enought for me that why I used my 300 RUM.

I'm also takeing my 300 RUM to Africa this July because it can reach out and get the animal. The ranges I'll be shooting are up to 250 yds. I have a Burris 4x16 scope on it also.

To me personally, I have owned both the 300 RUM and the 300 win mag.... yes the RUM is "better", yes its "faster" and yes its "more powerful", and becase of the mentioned reasons above, I sold it and kept the 300 win mag....

To me it was more of a "pride" thing more than anything else,.... I feel that Im a "skillfully" better hunter if I can hit my target all the way out there past 400 or 500 yards with a 30-06 or 308..... I know the 300 win mag or RUM is a "better tool" but I look at them differently.... I think the a real marksman is someone who does alot of practice with his tool and I see my self practicing a hell of alot more with my 308 or 30-06 than my 300 win mag or RUM....

I typicall go to my local gun range with 60 to 70 rounds of my 30-06, over 150 rounds of my 223, and sometimes 20 rounds of my 338 win mag or 375 h&h and stay all day on sunday from 10 AM all the way till 5 PM..... I shoot most of my ammo then I go home. If I was to use my 300 RUM, I highly doubt I can go through 60 to 70 rounds.... I know its doable, but I didnt wanna go through the hastle, so I sold it.

Now, because I do 90% of my practise at 300 yards, right now, my best ever groups were 4 rounds inside of a bullseye that the diameter measured just a few notches under an inch...... To some that may not seem alot but, I used to get 3 to 4" groups @ 300 yards a year ago, now Im doing MUCH better and I owe it all to long hours of practice

Is it better or is it just different?
One advandage of the 300 Win Mag is the availability of ammo. You can find it anywhere including Africa and other out to the way places.
I have quit worshipping at the alter of velocity and shoot mostly large bore moderate velocity rounds. They do fine out to 300 yds and if I want something else I can get it with a 300 WM or 300 Weatherby(both of which I already own).
Remington missed the boat on the indtoduction of the Ultras and they will never catch up to Winchester-kinda like the 6MM and the 243.

And of course EVERYONE knows a .300 Win is TOTALLY inadequate at 250 yards...

I have one I can't even get rid of. I rebarrelled another action to 35 Whelen Ackley, and I love it. The Ultra-Mag stayed in the safe this year. In my opinion the Whelen has better knock-down inside 250 yds.

I still do not understand why they did not bring out a 350 Ultra-Mag. Now, I personally would love to have that.

I have a 7mm rum, and have dropped big game at over 300 yards like nothing. Didn't even have to raise the crosshairs. The balistics chart on the ammo box says 6" drop at 1000 yds. I've never tried to prove that though. The ammo does seem to be getting scarce as of late.

6" drop at 1000 yards ? thats a joke right

?? maybe 6" drop at 300 when zeroed at 200, I can belive that, but NOT 1000 YARDS

Well I went on remington to prove myself and guess what. I am full of #$%&. Sorry, don't know what made me remember it that way, but I was wrong. It is -2.77 at three hundred yards, and that's still pretty flat shooting.

I have a 338 RUM. While there may not be much of a practical difference btween Win mags and RUMs for hunters up to, say 250-300 yards, the RUMs have a nitch market in the "long range shooter". This alone will keep the RUMs going for a very, very long time (especially the 300 RUM). The 338 RUM is the working man's 338 Lapua. I have also had ammo loaded by a small commercial handloader(for less recoil) to match 30-06 velosities for 200 gr bullets, 338 Win Mag velosities for 225 gr bullets and 375 Win mag velosities for 300 gr bullets (2,530 fps vs the 2,775 fps that it could be loaded at). So, i.e., it is very versitall.

WJM, would you mind mailing me some of your "light" RUM loading data... I have been searching for a long time for 338 RUM data that matches 338 win mag and I can't find any..... I know am in a market for a 338 and don't know which to get.... either 338 win mag or RUM.... I prefer to get the RUM and load it down to 338 (and if i EVER want the hot stuff, i'll fully load up)

6" @1000 yards?WOW i was trying to find the box for my 7mag so i could list it in the classifieds!lol my cousin switched from a 7mag to a rum and switched back after 1 season,says he saw no advantage to packing around the longest damn rifle i have ever seen.Anyone have the ballistics to compare it to a 7 rum?found this for 100 and 200 yards...not much difference

umm.... all the super duper magnums (like RUM , wby, lapua, anything-378 wby and whatnot) only give thier biggest advantage for shots that are above the 400 yard mark....

The 7mm RUM and the standard 7mm mag are kinda of close until they hit the 350 yard+... thats where the RUM has a flatter trajec. but your paying WAYYYY too much for a few inches here and there of trajectory...... I don't think its worth it

My 300 RUM shoots the Scirocco at 3260 FPS And my 300 Win Mag shoots a 180 gr bullet at 3060 FPS

I bought a XCR in 338RUM last year (2005). Two different rounds (both 250gr) offered by Remington, at the time Federal offered four different rounds in the Vital Shock series (180, 210, 225, 250) but have since dropped the 180gr and 250gr offerings. I have been shooting the 180 Vital Shock rounds as I do not currently have the space nor the time to do my own hand loads.

I just was on midwayusa.com today and noticed that Nosler has brought out custom ammo loads for the .338RUM

I have also found a few online custom ammo shops that offer something in the .338RUM also, around $80 a box.

I've had a Rem Sendero chambered in the 338RUM since that cartridge first hit the market. I hand load and it will push a 200 grain slug 3100 ft/sec muzzle velocity without hotrodding it. This cartridge is not finicky at all to handload for. It is a very accurate rifle and cartridge and has a pretty loyal following though probably small in number. I have considered selling it but whenever I think about it I always talk myself out of parting with it. One thing about the RUMs that I like is they are beltless and wish the other Magnum cartridges were also.

Ok I have to add my two cents, I handloaded for the 7mm rum for s while and well I think the case is over bore for 7mm i think the best one is the 300rum, one mayjor problem I ran into the the 7mmrum was to maintain good accuracy under a 1" at 100 yards you had to clean the barrel every 4 shots due to nitro fouling.

With the 210 partitions go with my 338 RUM 3232FPS and the 200gr Hot Core bullets go 3260 FPS. The 225gr Accubond bullets go 3178 FPS and the Partitions go 3138 FPS. The Serria 250gr bullets go 3015 FPS and the Partition goes 2975 FPS. The 300gr woodleigh RN bullets go 2720 FPS. Thats what what my 338 Rem Ultra Mag can do.

I had a 300RUM in a 700 BDL. Kicked liked heck. I put a limbsaver and that helped a little bit. Mine loved the 200 gr A-Frame remington factory ammo. That was the only factory ammo it liked, mine was especially finicky. I just got tired of not enjoying my time at the range and got rid of it when some things got tight. I have a 30-06 and it can take anything I'll ever hunt inside 300 yards.

They aren't bad guns, but the ammo is rare and pricey if you don't handload. I started handloading when I got my 300RUM. Just because I don't own one anymore doesn't mean that I don't still like them. I just think the BDL was too light to have it chambered in it. I think the military is using the 300 RUM in sniper rifles these days too so don't count on the 300 RUM going away any time soon.

300 WSM
300 RUM
338 RUM

The other once, I am not too sure about, but those 3 seem to be the most popular of all the new magnums that came out in the past 10 or 8 years
