I have a 375 Remington Ultra Mag in the Remington 700 XCR. I use Nosler custom ammo loaded with 260 grain AccuBonds at 2970 FPS for mad squirrels who empty my bird feeder. Funny thing is I can`t tell if I hit them.

I didn't say that. The RUM has more power and in case of a longer than 250yds I could make with the RUM and my 4X16 Burris Bplex scope.

I plan on hunting a Zerba, Warthog, & a Impala. I'll use my 338 RUM fot the Zerba and my 300 RUM for the Warthog and Impala

The question that springs to my mind when reading through this topic is: Why are we compairing the .300 Ultramag to the .300 winny and not the .300 weatherby? Same can be said about the respective .338 cartridges....

You can compare the ultra mags to whatever you want. Basically Remington took some of the most popular hunting calibers and put some speed on them. They'll be around for a long time, but they'll never be as popular as the old "go-to" calibers. The biggest arguement most have is "is it nessecary". The only way to answer any of these questions is to give it 5 or 10 years and see how many guns are chambered in that round and how many manufacturers are making rounds in that caliber.

The Ultras still beat the weatherby on balistics. And they are a heck of a lot cheaper to shoot, factory ammo that is. And ammo is easier to find.

Yes, the ultramags still beat some of the weatherbys, but it is a much closer comparison than the winmags. The ultras don't beat the 378 based rounds... But, I see no need in my arsenal for a .30 supermag or .338 supermag. In fact, I only have one magnum left, and it is based on the .338 winchester case.

I think the reason for the comparison is that the Win Mags are much more common a caliber than the Wby. If anything, the Wby Mags are the caliber that is on the way out, probably because of the RUMs.

all they do is push currently popular calibers just a little bit faster and increase the recoil factor....they will fade out but never totally disappear.

I would say that they increased the velocity by a bunch and made them shoot much flatter with minimal recoil increase from the standard mags.
I highly doubt they will fade, at least not the common cailibers.

the used racks are already full of them here,if you want an ultramag with hardly any rounds through it you can pick one up fairly cheap here.My cousin sold his 7 rum after 1 year because he didnt find the advertised advantage and the extra barrel length was a pain in the ass.With the 7mmrum unless you are shooting over 300 yards there is no real advantage.

Used racks are full of all calibers. I see a lot of 223's, 12g shotguns, 30-06, 7mm mag. You name it. Are they fading out?
And what is fairly cheap? I bet no different than any other caliber. If they are tell me where you are and I will buy the lot. A Buddy of mine bought a (new) 300RUM last weekend. Here they are no different than any other gun in their model.
I'll give you that they have no real advantage under 300yds, but whats the matter of being ready for your buck of a lifetime at 450.

there is nothing you can do at 450 with a 7mmrum that i cant do with my 7rm,if you know your rifle there is no advantage.

My 7mm has a 26" barrel but can't quite go as fast as the 7mm RUM. Its close but not there.

The 300 RUM is definitaley impressive on the ballistic charts. I know that I don't need one for whitetail, but I sure would like to have one though.

Well there is an advantage, believe it or not. The RUM is ballistically superior. I would not say that if you have a 7 mag that you should trade it in for the extra 8" less drop at 450yds. But if you are going to buy a mag, then why not but the superior one. And if you are going to buy a mag, I don't know why the 7mm would be picked over the 30 calibers either.

Yeah, its a bit more than you need for whitetails. But then again so are most rifles. You could probably load a 300 RUM down to 30-06 ballistics if you wanted to.

TRY AND FIND AMMO FOR AN ULTRA MAG in one of the small town sporting goods stores here and you will soon relize there is no advantage,when you can find it is overpriced.

I don't know where you are but I haven't had a problem finding it anywhere I've looked. And why would you be looking for RUM ammo anyway. they are probably right under your nose. Besides if you reload no need to buy ammo anyway, I assume you can buy 308 bullets in your neck of the woods can't you???

I live in Montana and most of the small town shops limit thier selection to the POPULAR calibers,its just an example dont take it so damn serious.These calibers will never be as popular as the current calibers like the 300wm,7rm,30-06,ect. and eventually it wil be difficult to get brass for reloading like my 8 mag.

Easy there Nonya, didn't mean to ruffle your feathers. I never stated that they would be as popular as the 30-06. No need for a RUM for your average deer hunter. But anyone who would buy a MAG will likely at least take a look at the RUM and for good reason. How many years have the RUMs even been out maybe 7, I think they've done quite well, nearly every person has heard of them and most know someone who has one. Brass will never be a problem, there are a lot more RUMs in circulation than 8mags. Now that is a perfect example of a round that died off.

Are the action lengths and the magazine boxes on the Ultra Mags both longer than those for the standard magnum actions? I have been toying with the idea of putting together a 358 STA or 358/300 RUM and was wondering if one of these actions would be my best bet or could I get by with a standard magnum action with a longer magazine box. Anyone in the know for one who doesn't.

My 300 RUM shell is longer that my 300 Win Mag but I think that the actions are the same.The Magazine Boxes are both the same lenght. The Rum bolt is alittle longer then the Win Mag bolt

Same length in the Rem long actions, but not in many others.

Hey Don Dick, word has it that the XCR does not shoot as well as the LSS. I am a big bore fan and am thinking of a 375 for little MS whitetail. How does yours shoot with lighter bullets(235-260) gr bullets? Thinking of wildcats, has anyone had any experience with a 6.5 Ultra? It ought to be real mean.
