Well, maybe not silly, but just reassure myself...

I'm pretty well set on ordering an 1895 Cowboy for Christmas.  Is this the same action as the other 1895's?  Will it handle the heavier loads as well as the traditional ones?  I'm about 99.99% sure the answer is yes... but...

Yup...It's the same...and yes..it will handle the heavier loads just fine...However..with it's metal butplate..your shoulder might not

Yup, MAC is right and makes a good point about felt recoil.
I have an 1895G, guide gun with a ported barrel and a freind of mine has the 45-70 cowboy model. One day we were both at the range and he was shooting some mild cast loads and I had my hand loads that pushed a 300gr Remington JHP bullet to 2250fps out of the 18.5" barrel of the guide gun.
He shot my gun and wanted to know if he could try my loads in his gun. We just knew (thought) that his gun being so much heavier would really help with the recoil. WE WERE WRONG!
I shot his gun with my loads and there was a big difference in felt recoil. I guess the recoil pad and the porting of the guide gun really do help tame recoil.

The CB has a hard rubber, not metal butt plate and is rather light at 8 lbs. I use a recoil pad with mine as I was nice and bruised with out it the first day. Recoil doesn't feel too bad, but the cumulative affect at the range an get to ya! I do really love the gun though!

I have an older 1895 SS that I don't mind much with the heavier loads (420 at 1650-1700).  Just a nice shove.  I don't like the 300's at 1900 though. They hit much faster and harder on the shoulder.  It of course has a hard rubber pad and no porting.  I'm thinking that if I want heavier than stock loads in the CB and if it hurts too much, I'll get a nice lace-on leather pad and maybe put some fringe/beads on it to make it look old-westy/indiany.

Your right...my typo...mine too was a hard rubber plate...but it still hurts just like a metal would... ...The Galco small slip on leather pad works fine for them...I put a small piece of rubatex insulating foam rubber on the curved part to fill it up.....and then put the  Galco pad on....It's a high quality leather slip on pad...no laces..it has a large well hidden velcro attatchment...and looks great...and works great in reducing the recoil...

I have a Pace recoil pad for my shoulder. It hides nicely under my shirt and cuts recoil down to a slight push. Of course it doesn't help the occasional slip off that hits my arm! If you want recoil, try the Hornady LR's! They kick like a SOB!

Hope you can get ahold of an 1895 cowboy, i have been trying about every two to three weeks now for about 4 months, i have called just about every gunshop in the western washington puget sound area and have had them contact their distributors and they dont have any, keep in mind that these are national distributors.  hope you do better than i have.

Have your distributer or dealer call Boyd Brothers..or Zanders...they should have their info...they had them last week...
