The Illinois regs book this year has a half page warning about shooting a wolf instead of a coyote.  Wonder why they put that in there?  Its no big secret that there are mountain lions in IL, but any time an animal gets torn up the verdict is always the same "not sure what could have done this".  In the county I live in the game warden told me she investigated a horse that had claw marks all over it, the Il state university lab said that the evidence was inconclusive as to what animal could have done this.  Come on it wasn't a dog, a bear maybe? Certainly not a bob cat.  They just refused to give the obvious answer because if it becomes a problem they will have to fess up that they knew about it and kept it from the public.  The DNR claims the wolves occasionally come down from northern WI, MN and MI.

What County are they supposed to be in?

The horse was torn up in Henry or Bureau county, there have been several unconfirmed sightings in Henry, Mercer and Henderson counties.  A bow-shot lion was found by a deer hunter in Mercer county two years ago.  Also a few years ago a cougar was killed by a train in southern Illinois.  The skulls were voluntarily given to the state for testing to determine if the cats were native or someone's pets that were released.  No conclusions could be reached about the origins of these cats.

I have never seen a wolf in the wild or while hunting in Wisconsin.  In "theory" I don't mind that all animals have a place in nature, but at the same time if I was seeing wolves around where kids may play I would follow a policy I heard of long ago.  I heard of this policy during a TV show featuring a Montana farmer (I think) talking about wolves and it's called the Three S's:

S - Shoot
S - Shovel
  and
S - Shut up

It's been a couple years since I saw that show but the message stuck with me.  If an animal is being disruptive in the country, nobody in the city really needs to know about it.  Some things are just better left unsaid.

Now that they are delisted, property owners can shoot a wolf or wolves if they deem them a threat to life or livestock.  Read in the paper today of a guy who shot one that was after his dog.  DNR said it was justified.  I think the population will be reduced significantly now that they are delisted.  Now you won't be sentenced to jail longer than if you shoot a person.

I don't believe you EVER want the DNR to find out if there are lions in Wisconsin or other states.  Seems like what happens next is it becomes "listed" and then the state has to protect them until their numbers run into the thousands.  Then the state says  "there are over a hundred now and we should apply for delisting", then some fool judge on the other side of the country says "no, you are stupid, & I know what's best for you."

TRUST ME, THERE ARE NO LIONS IN WISCONSIN.

There are wolves in Wisconsin, though only 300 or so, each with 50 feet so they leave lots of tracks.  I've seen some.
Vote them all out, EVERY election!

Does anyone remember the scene from "Quigley Down Under" showing the aborigines lined up on the skyline as far as you could see?   That needs to be US!
