280 AI Feeding Problems?
« on: December 14, 2006, 08:41:00 AM »
I have an older LH Rem 3006 that I would like to rebarrel to 280 AI.  I recently rebarreled a Rem VLS to 223 AI and it works fine as long as I use a single shot adaptor.  It really doesn't feed well when fed from the magizine.  This works fine for this rifle as I single load all of my squirrel and p-dog rifles.  But, will I experience the same problem with the 280 AI?  I don't want to end up with a single shop big game rifle.  Thanks

Im not familiar with the 280 AI but wouldnt the performance be pretty similar to the 7mm Rem Mag? If it is close then wouldnt it be simpler to get a 7 Mag?

I would have to convert the action over to handle the belted case and I already have a 7mm Mag and I don't have a 280 AI.

I'm sure someone with more expertise than me will respond, but "yes" you may experience some slight feeding issues, but then again you may not.  Sometimes the wider shoulder demension will throw things off, but it can normally be fixed with a little cautious modification.  A good gunsmith would be able to handle this without any problem.  It is probably an easier fix than modifying the bolt face to accomodate a belted case.  The one rifle I had rebarreled to 35 Whelen Improved made the transition from standard 30-06 without any problems.

All the AI rounds feed a little rough but should work OK. The problem as was said is the abrut shoulder angle and the relatively straight case.. A good smith should make the weapon feed just fine though..

I have a 280AI and yes it is somewhat more difficult to chamber, but not impossible.  Mine is built on a Rem 700 that was once a 30-06.  In every rifle I own, the top round in the magazine is the toughest to chamber smoothly.  For that reason I never load to a magazine's capacity.  Works better for me.  I also have the bad habbit of not fully extracting a round and reaching in for the empty case (ie.. a target shooting habbit).
