The movie is good, not anything approaching the "great[e]st film of all time".  Braveheart was more entertaining.  The Passion was more thought provoking.  It is violent to the point of distraction and simplistic in it's plot.  The filming is beautiful, as is scenery.  Sometimes the symbolism is obtuse (the "earth bleeding" was such an example).  I'm glad I saw it, and sorry I took my wife.

If you're looking for a religious message may I suggest it speaks to the danger of mindless followers of ANY religion, not just Mayans are your first review claimed.

I can't force myself to read the entire thing... my spin/crazy talk/propoganda limit is exceeded quickly.  Anyone who thinks braveheart is more violent hasn't seen apocolypto, there is no debate.

Years ago, I put anything by, or with, Mel Gibson on my 'avoid at all costs' list.  I would not see his movies if the admission price was free.

Braveheart was one of the best movies of this era, sad to make such blanket rules.

I agree, it is a great movie! I felt the same about Patroit.

Braveheart and Patriot - two of my favorite movies. Classics, in my opinion.

Couldn't agree more.  Great movies.  I've probably watched each about 7 or 8 times.

My vote goes to "Last of the Mohigans"  The theme of freedom and independence really got to me.  I always thought that that era of early America was the most exciting time in our history.  I find it hard to believe that the cowboy theme became so much more popular.

"Last of the Mohicans" is another of my favorites.  Truly a classic also.

Thought you all might like to know that "Mad Max" Mel who has made a fortune by starring in violence filled action flicks is anti-gun?  He has spoken out against the private ownership of firearms and has supported anti-gun organizations. I will not put another dime in his pocket myself.

I believe that is true about Mel as I recall seeing something reliable a few years back - just do not recall what it was anymore. Note - I said believe because I truly do not remember exactly what I read, but I found it particularly galling after I watched "Payback", which I thought was a miserably poor story that celebrated and showcased violence just for the $ake of doing it. I personally feel that media and societal issues are far more influential on crime than the presence of legally owned and safely used firearms are or ever will be, and anyone who speaks against lawful gun ownership and then sells violence for entertainment is a hypocrite/phony of the rankest order.
Still, I think "Patriot" and "Braveheart" are excellent films - classics.
Hard to believe someone could make films like that about freedom and then want to deny lawful Americans lawful firearms ownership, isn't it?

Don't recall where I heard that he was anti-gun but it was a long time ago, back around the time of his "Lethal Weapon" pic's.

I thought "We Were Soldiers" was a very good movie too. Loved Sam Elliott as CSM Plummley. ;D

I saw Letters from Iwo Jima on Friday.  I liked it a great deal.  I don't know anything about Director Clint Eastwood's politics, so I don't know if everyone here is allowed to see it.  If you are allowed to see it, you should.

I prefer "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad World"; I thought Jonathan Winters was hysterical.

Apacalypto was ok.  He has had some great films though. We were soldiers left me feeling pretty humbled. Braveheart was absolutely great as was the Patriot. None of Mel's films will ever be as great in my mind as True Grit though. To me that's the greatest movie of all time. But that's a personal choice. To each there own.

Another issue of an old story. See also "Drums Along the Mohawk", the Indians chase down Henry Fonda in Colonial New York State, and "Naked Jungle" ??  not exactly sure of the title....  Man running from African Natives.  Hollywood is so predictable.  I have a theory; They like re-doing the old stories and movies because the legal bills are lower than fighting in court about another writer showing up to claim copyright on a new creative story.  What crap.........  I challenge all of Hollywood to stop making movies with guns and gunplay in them if they really want to appear anti-gun rights.  Make me puke, Tim Robbins in the "NEW" War of the Worlds toting a shotgun!  Really, why dont you go stick your head in the toilet Tim and flush three times.....................

I don't remember which lethal weapon it was but they are walking through a police station and there is a large poster in the background that reads nra in big letters with a red circle and line through it.

There has never been any "proof" of this accusation of Mel, and the "anti" thing poster was the product of the producer/director---not Mel.

when interviewed about the Patriot,,Gibson stated that he AND his family enjoyed shooting regularly,,the interviewer asked if that included the children,,he answered""of course,I taught them myself""

I think it would be hard to beat Marjorie Main and Percy Kilbride in any of the Ma and Pa Kettle films. Far more real as I recall my life to date!
