22-250 loads for 1-12" twist stevens model 200???
« on: December 14, 2006, 10:46:43 AM »
Hey-

I have tried a number of different powders and charges with a Remington 50 grain power-lokt hollow point, but haven't found a good grouping load.  I have a stevens model 200 with a 1-12" twist.  Any suggestions on loads?  The 223's that my buddies have in this gun shoot great with the 1-9" twist.  My next move was to try a 40 grain Hornady....

Thanks

My 22-250- likes 36 grains of Varget with the Hornady 50 grain V-max pellets.

I have used 50 grain Power-lokts in front of 35.6 grains of H4895 and Winchester standard large rifle primer all loaded into Win. brass in three different rifles and they will all shoot into 1/2".  One of them is a Ruger #1, a Savage Model 12 Stainless and fluted, and my standard Handi-rifle.  I use no crimp on this load and they show no over-pressure signs in any of these rifle.  I had a guy tell me his 22-250 really liked Varget, but I am so satisfied with my load I didn't ask for specifics as I have tried Varget in a couple of other calibers and found them to be mediocre.

My 700 VLSS has a 1:14", and so far I've only used Varget. 36.1gr with a 52gr Sierra BTHP Match bullet works real well. I've had trouble getting 40gr bullets to group well and want to try Speer's 70gr as I've heard it can work well in slow-twist barrels if you load it right. Now I've got some different powders to try, such as IMR4895 and RL-7!
Life was so much simpler when I thought I knew everything...

Got a Savage model 12 in .22-250.  Nothing beats Hornady's 50 grain V-Max.  W760, IMR4064, H380, and Varget all shoot great.  W760 is my best load with the VMax, but the other powders are very close behind.  I use CCI200 primers.

I have a CZ 550 Varmint and it shoots very well with 37 gr I4064 and 50 Vmax the 22-250 is a really fun caliber to load for because it shoots most everything very well. For factory ammo you probably wont beat Win White Box.

Try some Serria 52 or 53 gr. match bullets and see what you gun can do with match bullets and that will give you a better idea of how good it is. Anothe Bullet that should work for hunting in your rifle is the Serria 55 gr. BTHP.

I've got a Savage 16, which should be the same as teh 200, and my best load is a Barnes 53 grain TSX on top of 38 grains of Varget and a CCI primer.  I can cover 3 shots with a dime at 100 yards shooting of the hood of my truck with it.  I've tried the 62 grainers from Barnes but I can't keep them within about 9" at 100 yards.

I'm using H-380 with a 60 grain V-max in a Douglas SS barrel one in 12 twist on my Savage bolt gun....Still trying for a one hole group with that barrel & load.On that same action I have used a bargain 243 varmint weight barrel from midway & it shoots one hole groups with the 87 gr V-max..Some barrels are just difficult to make groups with..Keep checking for copper fouling....Be sure all the other factors are right..Scope bases & rings tight..good trigger from a steady rest..Calm conditions..That caliber is loaded pretty hot, So watch for overheating the barrel as well..my best load was with the Sierra 55 gr semi-pointed soft point & IMR 4064.I normally just use CCI standard LR primers....Good luck..mike in ct

Ruger M77 VT, 1-14 twist.  35g Varget with Hornady 50g V-MAX, Speer or Hornady 52g BTHP.  Excellent velocity, excellent accuracy.  We're talking 4 shots and 0.5" at 200 yards with the BTHP's.

38g Varget with 40g Nosler BT.  Again, excellent velocity, excellent accuracy.

My 22-250 likes the 53gr. Barnes TripleShock Bullet pushed along by 35grs. of Hodgdons.  Use it for yotes, bobcats and hogs.  It knocks the stuffing out of hogs.
