Hog calls?
« on: December 14, 2006, 06:45:59 PM »
I was wandering if any of you fellas have tried calling hogs with a
mouth call? If so, could some of you recommend a good call that
would mimic hog distress squeals and such?
Some of the places I hunt have quite a bit of hog sign in the area.
I thought a call might be a good way to locate them or maybe even
call some in for a shot.
What do you guys think?
Thanks

This is not scientific, Just opinion. But I think hogs go more by sense of smell rather than
hearing. The only thing I have noticed that riles them up a little is the sound a piglet makes when it can't see it's mother. Other sounds seem to just make them run. Now There is one sound a boar makes that will piss off another boar but I have never heard it duplicated in a call. It will pop it's jaws together and make a thumping sound. Kind of like when a Whitetail buck stomps it's foot.
It maked a distinct sound that is almost impossible to duplicate properly but will bring another buck
very quickly.

i have used the primos grunter, had a sow at 35yds but no shot opportunity(archery).used phantompro series electronic,on baby pig distress, and called a huge tom bobcat to about 15yds.that gave me confidence to keep trying, the cat thought a piglet was there,so should work on pigs too.let us know how you do.we should all hunt these NEW predators, good luck brother.

You might try this call, it used to work well on the hogs we raised. It goes like this:

Soooweeee, pig, pig, pig.  Soooweeee, pig, pig, pig. Soooweeee, pig, pig, pig.

Repeat as necessary until they arrive. Used to not take us anymore than that to have them at the trough to feed.

In case you can't tell I have little use for such things as hog calls. It's just not been my experience that they are prone to come to any call or even to the sound of other hogs in the area. I've observed them a lot and just never noticed the grunts, snorts and other sounds made by hogs attracting others to them. Now the smell of food is a whole nother story and the sound of a feeder going off if they are used to one in the area is like a dinner bell to them for sure.
